Audi R10 Reportedly Approved, Could Deliver up to 1,000 Horsepower

With all the praise and adulation being heaped on the Porsche 918 Spyder, you know it’s only a matter of time before Audi got into the picture. After all, rumors of the R10 halo supercar have grown in recent years. Nothing has come out of it, at least not yet. But Automotorsport.com begs to differ because it’s reporting that Audi management has given the green light to the R10 with an eye on 2016 for the start of production.

Granted, nothing has been made official but sources close to Automotorsport.com indicate that the R10 is a go and will sit above the R8 as Audi’s new flagship exotic. It’s expected to receive a 6.0-liter, twin-turbo, V-10 engine that will pack as much as 850 horsepower.

That’s not even counting the addition of electric motors should Audi decide to take the hybrid route, similar to what Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren have done with their million-dollar exotics. A pair of electric motors in the R10 could tack on another 150 horsepower to give it as much as 1,000 horsepower.

The same sources also said that the R10 will be heavily inspired by Audi’s Le Mans race cars as far as technological advancements are concerned. Should that be the case, that’s going to give the R10 a real racing pedigree, and a highly successful one at that.

Look for Audi to pull a surprise on all of us and launch a prototype version of the R10 soon, possibly at an auto show later this year. Who knows, that might even be at the 2014 Paris Motor Show this week. I’m not holding onto hope that it happens, but I won’t be shocked if it did.

If there’s one thing the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Ferrari LaFerrari, and the McLaren P1 have taught us, it’s that there’s definitely a market for multi-million dollar hybrid supercars.

Now, other automakers are taking similar steps and from the looks of things, Audi’s next in line. I’m not going to pretend to hide my excitement about the prospect of finally seeing the R10 out on the road.

Rumors of the car have gone on long enough. Now that Audi management has reportedly given the green light on the vehicle, it may be finally time to put all those rumors to bed.

What do we really know about the R10 other than the recently supplied information? Not a whole lot, really. At one point, the car was supposedly going to be called the R20 and would essentially be a street-legal version of the R18, Audi’s multi-awarded Le Mans race car. There were also rumors that Audi was going to fit the car with gullwing doors, a single-frame grille, stacked LED headlights, and an adjustable rear spoiler.

While there’s still a possibility that we’ll see at least some of those design features, it’s highly unlikely that all of them would show up on the production R10. I’m most skeptical about those gullwing doors because of Lamborghini’s history with these style of doors.

What does seem clear at this point is that Audi will only build a limited number of R10 models. There’s no telling what that number is, but I don’t see it being more than the 499 LaFerrari units Ferrari has built.

We’ve waited a long time for the Audi R10. Hopefully, we’ll get to see the actual thing sooner than later. The time has arrived, Audi.

E39 power steering ATF and engine oil

Hey guys

So the touring has the power steering leakage problem. On the cap it states to use ATF only. Can anyone point me in the right direction WRT to which brand and type of atf is ok to use for topups? This will just be till I can get around to redoing the hoses/clips and maybe replace/flush the fluid. etc.

Then what oil are you using on these 525i motors? Shell Helix HX7 fine? Or should I go with Shell Helix ultra?

Also read somewhere that changing the oil might help get rid of the lifter noise? Would something like Liquimoly Hydraulic Lifter Additive be beneficial? Or is it just a waste if money?

Return of the Black Death/Plague

The black plague has broke out in Madagascar. In late 2013, a deadly outbreak of the plague hit small villages around the country killing dozens of people. Rumored to have taken root in overcrowded prisons, the disease has flourished amid Madagascar’s increasing poverty and poor waste management. Antibiotics to treat the disease have been developed and are available in most countries, but Madagascar’s rudimentary healthcare system has left a number of people stranded without care.

Madagascar's Plague Outbreak

[Image: 393898547_12c48d6a96_b.jpg?itok=U8K2li44]

During the month of December, the island nation of Madagascar reported cases of both bubonic and pneumonic plague. Mandritsara, a remote village in northeast Madagascar, reported 20 deaths in a single week in early December. Since September 84 cases and 42 deaths have been reported in 4 of Madagascar’s 112 districts, of which 60 cases were suspected to be pneumonic plague. The affected locations include Mandritsara, Soanierana Ivongo, Ikongo, and Tsiroanomandidy.

Plague, also known as the Black Death, is caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It is typically transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected flea. Fleas from rats and other rodents, such as squirrels, chipmunks, and prairie dogs, can carry and transmit the Yersinia pestis bacteria. The three most common manifestations of plague are bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic. Bubonic plague is characterized by enlarged lymph nodes called buboes. Septicemic plague is the result of the infection spreading through the bloodstream. Pneumonic plague is the most serious form of the disease and is the only type of plague capable of being transmitted person-to-person, which it does through infected droplets in the air. Thankfully, plague can usually be treated with antibiotics, especially if it is detected early.

While plague isn’t common in many parts of the world, Madagascar reports between 300 and 600 cases per year (80% of the world’s bubonic plague cases). Typically cases are seen between October and March. In 2012, Madagascar reported 60 deaths due to bubonic plague. Prisons have been particularly affected because of overcrowding and rat infestations. An extermination campaign, to rid prisons of rats and fleas, to hopefully prevent future outbreaks has been underway.

The online publication The Week reports concern that the current outbreak could spread to more populated towns and cities due to poor living standards and unsanitary conditions, exacerbated by political unrest ongoing since 2009. With decreased access to antibiotic medication, and living conditions where rodents are often present due to rice crops being stored in homes, many parts of Madagascar are already at heightened risk for outbreaks of plague.

The outbreak in Madagascar should be a concern to all of us worldwide, as antibiotic resistant plague, a mutation of the disease into a less treatable form, has been seen before and could occur again.

Stripped down the Valeo alternator today and found the brushes to be non-existent. The sliprings looks a little worn but should last for quite a few more miles. Hopefully I can find the brushes locally, being a small town, I have my doubts. No only the DDE light issues must still be sorted, hopefully someone on the forum will reply in due time........

Betty gets new Oil

hey gents..

over the past few weeks I picked up a few niggly bits with betty and then I get slammed with a rumble from the head. My heart jumped into my throat. I take her to a very good friend of my pops and he looks at me and says, son, you have a vanos problem. he then proceeds to tell me, and I aint touching it. this coming from a BMW techie.

anyhow, I remembered a few months ago Fiekie spoke about this place the did his car. so I decide to call, APS and speak to Mr Slabbert. i leave a message and they say he will call me back. Like clock work, my phone rings and explain my problem with sound effects and all(only Cape Town brein ous know how). he says, that can be many things but bring the car to me and ill take a listen. I do that on Monday. He says, what oil is in here. I get all big chested and say, the previous company used shell 15w 40. he says, woooooah. first things first, we drain the oil, new and proper filter, ill replace the goodies in the vanos and we take it from there.

I drop the car off the Tuesday, he does what he does. I call later to check price and if everything is still all good. he says, listen boet, I need to keep the car another day cause I'm not happy. He gives me a courtesy car and I wait another day. I don't have any probs with that because I don't want to rush anything. He calls me and says, listen bro, everything is sorted I'll bring the car to you.

we hook up to swop cars, he explains all the things he did and that everything should be more than hundreds. unlocked a few ponies as well because the fuel filter was no longer a fuel filter, it was actually a stopper.

he walks to the car, turns the key and she burbles into existence. quiet, slight rumble but not as it was before. he says it will eventually go away when the new oil is running consistently through all the parts.

firstly, she revs like a freaking motorbike, normally i used to get a pinging noise when she is loaded just before the vanos comes in, that doesn't happen anymore, i could feel her holding back but now she just goes. in general she is sooooooooo smooth and really awesome.

oh wait, before i forget - HE SENDS ME A MESSAGE TO ASK HOW THE CAR IS GOING. I nearly shat myself. i didn't even know how to respond. if that is not awesome service, then I don't know.

Fiekie - shot for giving me the heads up on who to take my car to.

APS for the win and they will definitely be seeing me again.

P.S. i have a smaaaaaaalllll APS sticker on my back window, it means dangerous inside Rollsmile

oh, I saw your cabby there fiekie, whats happening. it looks very nice in the metal. shooooo

Howzit Fanatics

I'm turning 30 in a few months time and have been married for 4 years now.
My wife & I feel that we don't really want to have kids. For a few years after getting married, we were just not ready (work, studies etc) and at the moment, even if we wanted kids, the time is not right now. Wife says that maybe next year she might want to. Right now we just feel that whether it happens or not, that we will be okay. (We like kids, that aren't ours and when they're not crying Rollsmile)

(that was some background info)

The discussion is this: Do couples who choose not to have kids go on to live a happy life? (there is a broad definition of "happy lives") Do they ever regret the decision?

Looking forward to your thoughts

Today I say goodbye to my beautiful 330i M-Sport

So I got a call this morning from BMW to let me know my new 328i M-Sport is ready for collection.

I have been so excited all week just waiting for the call... little did I know that when I got the call, instead of jumping over the wall at work to chase a chicken out of pure excitement, a deep sense of sadness fell upon me. Cry

I never realized until now, just how much my car meant to me. She has done me so well, never let me down and never left me stranded. I took her in, 3 years ago and made her my own... always put a smile on my face. I wish I could afford to keep her. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

I took some time off work this morning after hearing and took her for her last car wash... Got back to the office and wow she looked so good. I managed to snap some quick pics before tearing up a lil... so here they are... nothing special. Cry

Hi Everyone.

So I'm in the process of looking to get a newer car (or actually a more mature or faster car.)

Nothing wrong with mine, but it's just "time".

So I've been looking at 135i's Coupe's, M135i's, 335i's (Coupe's & F30's) and here and there a decent 5 series (F10) and now this popped up:

http://www.gumtree.co.za/a-cars-bakkies/...0042530809

Fuel will be a killer.... but look at it.... and the power....

Any tips or hints to look out for? I won't be this specific car, I will get the relevant individual car checked out (Get the BMW history and so) but this car now has added this model to the "short-list". Cartel

Any other considerations?
