So I finally decided to start on my full restoration of a 1967 1600 02.
The car was originally bought by an owner in Kakamas. After some mechanical mishaps by his son and 2 engine changes he stored the car in 1983.The car was without engine and g/box but in otherwise dry and complete rust free and in good state. It was sold of to a guy in 2010 and a few months later he sold it off to me. I stored the car as I was then busy with the 530MLE.
I decided January that it was time to build my wife her classic car, even though I bought her the 850ci,.. go figure!!
Car was built in Germany, one of the first 2500 1600 off the production line, Bristol grey and blue sparse interior. Black and white speckled carpets. Fitted with 1600 M10 engine which they later stroked for the 2.0l 02's.The engines have been carried through almost unchanged from the early 60's in 1500 , 1600, 1800, 2000 cc format in a wide range of BMW's, 02' range, 2000 coupe's, E12 518 and 520'S and E21 316 and 318. Indestructable. The are the same blocks that BMW williams used in F1 to power them to World victories with 1500cc Turbocharged that could develop almost 1000kw!!
I am doing a full nut and bolt restoration and trying to keep it as original as I can and trying to use as much of the original parts.
Early March I finished with getting the cars paperwork sorted out and a engine added to its papers that I sourced in Durban.
Some pics..
March I stripped it totally and off it went to the panelbeaters. MiniLites are sold off and genuine steelies are now on the car.
I ordered some spares from WallotNesch in Germany.
All new rubbers for doors, windows, seals, bonnets, boot, all suspension rubbers, front shock tower bearings, crome trims, badges, front and rear light gaskets and gasket and chrome inserts for both windscreens.
Also engine spares arrived.
Started with the bottom end, cleaned, checked, sprayed and welsh plugs fitted. All is still standard an no over sizing needed.
Car is being sprayed Fyord Blue and 2 sets of blue original vinyl seats will be repaired to make one good set in original condition. The patterened vinyl panel material is no longer available and I want the original look. The original black and white speckled carpets are also going back in.
Car will look similiar to this.
Will post as I go..
