Yesterday , I attended the BMW Advanced High Performance M3 DCT Course and All I can say is it’s was awesome .I learnt all the M3 and DCT configurations and how to set and use them . I now understand what the capabilities of M-Dynamics and DCT .I am a novice defence driver and I want to share my experience with the forum .This may not be exciting to the more advanced drivers and racers or do the track days.
I am by NO means advertising and I though since this is a BMW fanatics forum, it makes sense to share. They also host this course for other ///M series as well.
This course runs for a full day from 07H30 – 16H30 . We started with theory and some good discussions around the aspects of driving style (seating and steering wheel position). Also learnt how much of Physics is involved when driving a vehicle and the forces that counter act our actions. We also covered parts of the vehicle like tyres etc.
The second part of the training was in option the best…….. We were taken to Zwartkops Raceway where the training was in three parts and a fourth part (M3 DCT )was around using the M-Dynamics and DCT when setting up and driving. On the first round we were given free reign and drive the M3 around the track any way we wanted to. So here we though we are F1 drivers and drove any style around the track free style.
We were given feedback our session an corrective tips and technical know-how.
The second session was guidance around the track and how to spot the points to negotiate the bends the entrances, the apexes and clipping points and the exits points. We also was though to look further at the road instead of the immediate road in front of us. The best part of this exercise was that we normally drive towards what we are directly looking at and normally towards hazards. We also learnt the acceleration and deceleration points. Also how and when to break and change gears.
The third session was when all markers where removed and raced on our own without the instructors input. This shows us how much better we can race and much faster lap times. The most exciting part of the track session was driving around the track and not using the brakes….
My best experience on the M-Dynamic and DCT session was using LAUNCH CONTROL . I could not believe how fast the ///M takes off. Other thing like the Power button and the huge difference the M button on the steering wheel make when racing. I also found out that we should NOT treat the DCT as an automatic transmission as it is as much fun even better than a manual. We were only allowed to use DCT on the track. I never had so much fun DCT before.
After lunch we got a chance to drive F30’s on the Skid Pan to counter under and over steering. We got tired of driving the right way and started doing 360’s on the Skid Pan . I got some good videos on this session and we had some good laughs.
Overall it was a really great and amazing day for me and I recommend this to any driver who has not already been on a race track or any advance drivers course. All I can say is WOW.I got to drive the crap out of an M3 that does not belong to me and at the end I got a nicely framed certificate for my troubles.
