Hi, Spent some time this weekend on this site and others to gain some understanding. I am enjoying it. This is my first post on the forum. I hope I am not breaking any rules. I have two queries on my car that has 230k km on the clock.
1. I have taken my car to local indie in CPT. The car was not able to start and I wanted the oil level sensor fixed. Once they got it started(by replacing servomotor and Excentric Shaft Sensor) , the idling was erratic.I was charged R20 k for repairs. For an old car(cosmetically in good shape) where the trade is R25k , it is very painfull. The price of the parts was :
Oil level Sensor :R2500
Excentric Shaft Sensor : R7068
ServoMotor(ValveTronic) :R4147
There was assorted issues fixed, like de-Kat, checking electronics , fitted new gear lever, replaced oil, and labour. I feel the price is fair . What do you think? I am pretty sure it would have been much more at the dealers.
2. My MAS sensor is shot, idling is erratic (idling hovering over 500 and up to 700, and also loose power between 2000-3000 revs). I got a quote from them to have that replaced by Bosch part, around R3500. It is definitely the sensor,as they tested it with another second hand sensor , and problem solved. Yesterday I unplugged it, and now no more erratic idling issues. Is the quoted price fair ?
I am quite depressed, and need some comfort that what I paid is fair, and that I am not taken to the cleaners. My car is smoking (blue)now as well, and I was told by mechanic that it could be due to MAS sensor, and once it is sorted, the smoke should subside. Else it is possibly pcv valve. Apparently the head and gaskets are fine.
Many thanks to your understanding and assistance.
