So finally bit the bullet and made the change. The standard setup on the X5 was driving me up the wall! (total lack of power and weak/muffled treble). So swapped the standard 4" front with Infinity 42.9i co-axials. They are in fact 2 ohm resistance that offer much more efficient speakers that can be used with the standard head unit amplification, but reproduce much more music. It has built in cross-over and the sound quality is superb! Here is a comparison with the standard BMW front 4"
This is one of the few quality front speakers that actually fit the narrow void in the BMW doors. I was able to fit the speaker by removing the existing speaker and bolting the Infinity back in the same position. 2 of the holes line up, but the other 2 had to go into the plastic door card.
Here is a comparison of the standard speaker fitted and the newly installed speaker
A nervous moment while I fitted the door cards back as I wasnt sure if the extra depth would negatively impact the door, but they fit perfectly!
The result?
Much better high frequency response. Excellent quality (now I can actually hear the noise on the radio stations!) much better performance on high volume.
Unfortunately, now my low frequency is falling behind. So the next upgrade will probably have to be either under seat woofer replacement, or adding a sub in the back. Both will involve adding an amplifier and alot of cabling. So we'll have to see about that!
