Hi Fellow Fanatics,
As some of you may know, my e46 330d's turbo fried some time ago. I decided opening the motor, and everything was quite badly worn.
Against my better judgement, I decided to unleash the credit card and redo the motor and puchased a new turbo. Even though we have done this rebuild ourselves, it has been a very expensive exercise in my opinion and is worthy of caution when taking on a project like this, as i didnt think of all the smaller costs related to the engine, and boy, they heaped up quickly. However, in the process every single issue on this car will be taken care of, and the car will be as good as new, and i must add that i really tried getting the best possible parts available non-OEM. It was a struggle as most of the dealers only had bits and pieces, or didnt have the make of parts i wanted. so i scrambled between parts shops to get the best deal and that was probably the biggest and most time consuming headache.
To date we have done the following:
1. Stripped Engine and cleaned and polished all the parts including the bolts.
2. Sent head in for service. head was still good, so just cleaned it, replaced valve stem seals, checked clearances and seated valves.
3. Rebored Engine to 10 thou
4. Serviced Power Steering Pump
5. Serviced Aircon Pump
6. Refitted Engine Components: Pistons & Rings, Crank, Head (torqued to spec), Crank casing, Front Chain Sprockets, Diesel Pump, Belt Tensioner Pulleys x 3
Still to do:
1. Reinstall Engine
2. Refurbish and clean Radiator and Intercooler
3. Install bumper
4. Install Lights (and rewire the angel eyes)
5. Replace rear bearing on Gearbox and replace Guibo
6. Install New Front Brake Disks
7. Remove play on Diff
8. Spray Front Bumper (prep already done)
Parts List:
New Original Garrett GT2260V Turbo
24 x valve stem seals
6 x New Nural Pistons 10 thou and Rings
New Main Bearings, Big Ends and Small Ends
New Victor Reinz Head gasket, Top gasket set and Lower Gasket Set
3 x Tensioner Pulleys
1 x Power Steering Pulley Bearing
I will present a summary of my costs at the end of the exercise
