DIY e46 Inlet and Exhaust Camshaft Sensors

Quick DIY on replacing these. The exhaust Camshaft sensor may take a whole of 5 min to do.

Standing infront of the engine you will see a plug to the left just under the Valve Cover (The black cover with grey stripes on top of the engine).

By pressing on both sides and pulling towards you the plug should come out. Space is just a bit limited.

Now use your Jedi intuition and feel where the socket for the plug is that you just removed. Just under the socket of the sensor and to the left you will feel a Hex bolt.(I think its 5 mm) See the blue mark on the below pic. (This is after the sensor and bolt was removed)

The difference between new and old. (New left, old right) Remember there is a green rubber O ring that should be on the sensor. Mine was in the hole and I just pulled it out and fitted it on the new one. Its good to replace the o ring but mine was still fine.

Replace the new sensor by feeling where the hole is and guiding it in. To make sure the Hex bolt lines up with the sensor hole adn the hole in the engine I used a smaller Allen key and inserted it through the sensor hole and then through the hole in the engine. That way I know the sensor is properly lined up and the bolt is also lined up to be tightened.

Tighten the Hex bolt and plug the plugh back in.

DONE

Nex is the Inlet/intake Camshaft sensor.

Remove the breather hose. (Top centre in the below pic by pushing on top and bottom of the pipe and pulling it to the right) (My hose was so brittle it snapped when I pushed it out of the way) (Another thing to replace argh....) The VANOS solenoid (not shown in the below pic but will show you in another pic) can be removed with a 32mm open wrench by pulling towards the right top loosen, to the left to tighten. Just remember to first undo the plug at the back of the solenoid.

You will also note the socket wrench already loosening the hex bolt for the inlet/intake camshaft sensor in the above pic.

The reason why I might have been getting camshaft errors.

(Can you believe those are the hands of a hand model...)

Comparisson between old and new. (old top, new bottom)

Follow the lead from your old camshaft sensor to the plug. You will note the plug is just above the thick red power cable running from the alternator.

Right in the centre of this pic you will see a shiny metal clip. Just below the gator and just above the radiator hose. Like other DIY's show I don't think to necessary to loosen the power steering resevoir. Undo the plug by pressing down and pulling the plug out. Thread it through and remove the old sensor. Thread the new one through and plug in. Replace by following the reverse of above and you are done.
