E64 - Airbag/Seatbelt Ligths

Good morning folks,

So last week Wednesday the Seatbelt and Airbag lights on my 6-er came on, and no matter how many times I reset them using INPA they just came straight back. So I wanted to share the fault finding and fixing process I used to eliminate the error.

Had a chat with my buddy at Cedar Isle, and he said that in some cases the pyro charge on the positive terminal of the battery could go faulty and cause that warning...bam...R6k job.

Not believing this to be the problem, I did an error trace using INPA and found that the error is coming from the SBSL and SBSR modules, the modules which control the passenger and driver side airbag functions including seat sensors.

Thinking I might have inadvertently changed some codes I factory-flashed both modules but the error persisted. I then decided to have a look at the coding and to my surprise the passenger side module had its sensor mat disabled in the default coding. I simply changed on line of code from nicht_aktiv to activ, cleared the error once more and it has not come back again.

I don't understand why BMW made such a mess of the seat occupancy sensors (i have read stories by 7-series owners who had ALL their mats fail).

I have also read that some people get around the errors by simply disabling the SRS system all together. Needless to say this is not only a very unsafe idea but should your car be in an accident then your insurance with not pay out.

Couple of hours of my time, a dash of patience and an expensive trip to the dealers averted with all my safety systems intact.
