advice on starter toolkits for DIY maintenance

hi all

i have decided to start doing DIY work on my E46 and want to know what are the most common tools used to work on it...

Please can you add to this thread for basics needed. I have a few tools but they are nothing great and would like to invest in some quality stuff...

off the top of my head:

socket and spanner set
screwdrivers (flat and star)
mallet
trolley jack
jack stands
