Mobile operators in South Africa haven’t even confirmed that they will be offering the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait until its official local launch to get one.
A number of online retailers, including TikTok, Kalahari, and onlinebargains (via Bidorbuy) are offering pre-orders for the iPhone 6 range.
Prices on the pre-orders vary dramatically between sellers. Promised arrival dates also differ, with TikTok and onlinebargains saying that the devices will arrive by the end of September, while Kalahari estimates delivery by the end of October.
Pre-launch imports of devices such as the iPhone are often a risky business warranty-wise, and are usually more expensive than what their normal retail price would be.
The top-end (128GB) iPhone 6 is going for R16,999 through Kalahari, while the 128GB iPhone 6 Plus is on pre-order for R17,999.
We’ve put together some bundles of gear you could get for that money instead, shown in the table below. For each bundle we tried to select one large-screen smartphone and one tablet, throwing in a 128GB SanDisk microSD card where appropriate.
For the most part, the stuff is already available in South Africa, with the Sony Xperia Z3 being an exception.
If you would like a more current phone in the Nokia bundle, substitute the Lumia 1520 and the memory card for a Nokia Lumia 930 for R6,997 (price from the Orange online store).
Most prices are from the Orange online shop (with the iPad being an exception).
