Idling issue

Hoping someone can shed some light on this. What happens is that the car idles erratically. Doesn't happen from cold, it needs to warm up first.

So once the car has been driven a bit and say I stop at a robot, the idle goes up, sometimes to 2000 sometimes to 3500. If I blip the throttle it settles down. If I just leave it idling it doesn't always stay in the same place, it hunts trying to find a stable idle.

So I have taken it to the pros and still don't have a solution.
Sav at Savspeed reckons is the engine management (Unichip), but Savspeed doesn't deal in Unichip.

RGM does do Unichip, but Steven from RGM reckons is definitely not the engine management.

My knowledge of engine management is limited to begin with and definitely exhausted at this point, and I have two reputable shops telling me different things. Which is right?

The RGM website says Unichip can control idle speed, which would make sense, so is it something else?

Car is a E36 328i

Just to be clear - I am not ranting on either of these shops.
I have had very good service from both and will spend more money with both in the future.

Just right now neither has a viable solution to my problem.
The only course of action currently on the table is to replace the Unichip with something else, just to prove a point, and I don't believe that is the right thing to do.
