The month of July saw South Africa’s motor industry continue to chug along with a modest 7.5 percent year-on-year growth in new vehicle sales, according to data released by RGT Smart.
The industry enjoyed strong demand from rental companies, which bought 11.4 percent of the 58 140 units sold in July; dealer sales made up 82 percent of the total while company fleet and government sales accounted for 4.6 and 2.0 percent of the pie, respectively.
Despite a 3.6 percent decline in vehicle exports in July, South Africa still remains on course for its best export year ever thanks to increased exports to North America, Asia and Africa.
The local market, meanwhile, remains on target for its third best year ever, with a projected sales figure of 660 000 units.
July’s sales race saw Toyota regain the lead from Volkswagen with a total of 11 935 vehicles sold, versus 10 613. The AMH/AAD group, which imports and sells the Hyundai, Kia, Chery, Foton and Daihatsu brands, took the final podium spot with 6692 sales; Ford and GMSA followed in fourth and fifth with 5738 and 5487 units respectively.
AMH/AAD continue to keep individual sales figures a secret, but did report category sales of 3446 small cars (1400cc or less), 2012 medium cars (1400cc – 2500cc), 47 large cars (2400cc upwards), 487 SUVs, 650 LCVs and 50 MCVs.
