Big petrol price hike for SA motorists
Big petrol price hike for SA motorists
The petrol price could rise by 26 cents per litre at the end of the month, the Automobile Association said on Tuesday.
SAPA July 15, 2014

The petrol price could rise by 26 cents per litre at the end of the month, the Automobile Association said on Tuesday.
“There has been a slow, but steady uptick in the Rand/US dollar exchange rate since the start of July,” it said in a statement.
“Over the same period, international petroleum prices have come off their mid-June highs, but not enough to offset the under-recovery in the petrol price.”
Earlier this month, the petrol price increased by 29 cents.
The outlook for the Diesel price was more favourable. Current data predicted a slight price increase of around 3.5 cents per litre, the AA said.
“If international petroleum prices continue to trend downwards, the major factor will be the exchange rate.”
The organisation said speedy resolutions to current labour disputes were important as they could negatively affect the fuel price.
The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) in the metal and engineering sector is currently on strike.
Union members downed tools on July 1, initially demanding a salary increase of 12 percent, dropped from their pre-strike demand of 15 percent, a R1000 housing allowance, and a total ban on labour brokers.
The union announced on Sunday it had lowered its wage increase demand to 10 percent.
The Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa announced on Tuesday it had withdrawn its final wage offer.

Yaseen & Divio - Taking BMWFanatics to new heights!
BMWFanatics would like to thank Yaseen Arbee and Divio for their amazing work with Gauteng BMW Events. Yaseen has been extremely instrumental in organising some great events and Divio has been there to support him with nothing short of sensational photography. This does not go unnoticed and as such a few international forums have picked up in the events held and published them on their HomePages! That in itself is a sign of the great team work they have and how they are able to achieve so much, through dedication and hard work. We are indebted to both of these members for their amazing work and continue to provide support (moral in some cases) to all of their events.
Once again well done!
Here are the links to the web pages they have been featured on, and some pics from the event itself:

Some Sad News - Vehicle Change
Good Morning Everyone,
It is with a heavy heart that I must say I am leaving the BMW blood-line...
With my work getting busier I have been struggling to get on site with the F20 and decided to sell her last month and get a Land Rover (and before you say anything about the X3/5, I drove a few and they just did not live up to the challenge).
I will still be an active poster on the forums, helping out where I can.

Just ran into my 1st problem with my e90
So after a year of driving the hell out of my car it developed a slight clicking noise on cold start up.
Turns out the AC pump bearings need to be replaced as well as the front pulleys.
SA warranties all put R2300.00 Rand in but the total bill for the repair is around R10000.00 after regas and labour and all that jazz.
Im going to have to save some cash over the next month or two so im going to have to baby the car and hope it holds out.
Question 1: Do you guys think that is a resonable repair quote.
Question 2: If said AC pump seizes, what is the worst that can happen?

Hi from the cape
Hi Guys.
Just
Been browsing for a long time.
I have always loved BMW's since my first car was a e30 325i.
I have recently purchased another e30 318i coupe and now just need to do some no a lot of maintenance to restore it to what I think it should be.
So please forgive me if I ask a lot of questions here and there.
I must also compliment everyone for a wonderful forum you guys have going here.
Cheers

Hi Guys
Was chatting to a few BMW 3 series fans this week and they cant really agree which of the three models above is the best to own. Which would be your ultimate best? And if you could combine them....which features or specs would you use?
Just curious...

Remote Controlled Lighting Options
Hey guys
So I'm in the process of installing lighting in my home theatre room. I have an electrician coming in 2 weeks time to do the installation. The setup will be as follows:
- There will be 6 x 7W dimable LED downlights along the sides of the room
- 2 x 7W dimable LED downlights in a display cabinet on either side of the projector screen
- 24 x 1.5W dimable LED starlights randomly placed in the ceiling.
- 1 x existing non dimable light fixture in the center of the room which I'm keeping as is.
All 4 points above will be running off their own dimmer switches (3 dimmer switches and 1 regular light switch). Everything is 220v with the exception of the starlights which will be run off an extra low voltage transformer.
What I would like to do is have all the lighting in the room controlled by remote. I have a Logitech Harmony One remote which controls everything in the room at the moment and it can be programmed to control just about any IR device so it would be cool to have the lights programmed on it as well.
Anyone with experience on the above have any advice/pointers on what is needed and the best way to set it up?

Tyre prices - BMW dealer vs Tyre dealer
Thought I have to share this experience...
So our lovely hole-filled roads claimed a rim on my E90 330i this week...and a tyre.
Rim can be repaired (crack) at a cost of R700. (No guarantee, probably)
And i got quoted R3300 for a 225/40R18 Bridgestone Potenza RE050 RFT...
This from a reputable tyre dealer promising me this is 'his best price'...
So I go to the agents to get a quote on a new rim (Style 162, 8J front) and at the same time request the parts guy to quote me on a tyre as well.
Much to my surprise, the exact same tyre from BMW costs R2200, so I kindly asked for 2, and a new rim...
Tyre dealers surely rip us off.
My advice would be to get a quote from a BMW dealer next time you need tyres.
Cheers

Tour de France 2014 Appreciation
Hi guys,
You may have noticed the Tour de France 2014 is taking place right now. So just to show some appreciation to the best bicycles made by car manufacturers.
Lotus
Putting foot to pedal, so to speak, let’s start with one of the most famous examples: Lotus. The LotusSport Pursuit Bicycle – which became known as the Lotus Type 108 and later the Type 110 – is an enormously aerodynamic piece of carbonfibre sculpture, built to take on the Olympic Games.
Chris Boardman broke the 4,000m pursuit world record at the 1992 Games using just such a machine. You could buy one, but they cost R274,000 – an incredible amount of money at the time. These days, if you want a Lotus-branded bike, try the Condor for Lotus Type 1 LC (pictured), a snip at R95,000.
McLaren
Another car brand taking the bike tie-up very seriously McLaren. The Formula One and supercar firm’s McLaren Applied Technologies division – sounds like the Wayne Applied Sciences that comes up with all of Batman’s toys, doesn’t it? – got together with Specialized to produce this beauty.
Called the Specialized S-Works + McLaren Venge, this lightweight, aero-efficient road bike is exactly the type British biking hero Mark Cavendish rode to great success.
Jaguar
More super seriousness – don’t worry, the mad stuff is coming later – this time from Team Sky sponsors, Jaguar, which got together with the Italian bike maker Pinarello to engineer the 2014 Team Sky bicycle.
While Pinarello took care of the 'hard points' – the fixed areas where bits are attached – Jaguar helped hone the aerodynamics of the frame, including some extra asymmetrical elements. Sounds crazy, but it is 6.4% more aerodynamic than before… Chris Froome has just ridden one through the EuroTunnel.
Aston Martin
The Aston Martin One-77 is a supercar, right? Its name stemming from the fact that it cost R18 million and was available in a limited run of just 77 examples. All true. But there is also an Aston Martin One-77 bicycle, and it’s almost as outrageous.
Built by Factor (we’ll be coming back to these guys), the Aston One-77 bike cost R450,000, took two weeks to put together and included a whole host of on-board data-logging equipment. A bike fit for James Bond, for sure.
BMW
BMW: the ultimate riding machine? Could be. The firm refers to its 2014 bicycle collection as the third generation of BMW bikes, but in fact it has been building two-wheeled choices for decades. It even produced an aluminium-frame bike in the 1950s – 30 years before the metal became popular in the industry.
The new ones are characterised by seamless welds, and a frame that echoes the look of a motorcycle fuel tank. The example above was commissioned from Just Ride It custom bikes in Melbourne, Australia, and echoes the look of the 2014 BMW M4 DTM safety car.
Porsche
You know when Porsche puts the letters 'R' and 'S' on something that it isn’t messing around. And so it is with its bicycle range, with the Porsche Bike RS sitting firmly at the top of the tree.
From the funky wheels to the carbonfibre parts, this might just be cooler than most of the Porsche car lineup. And that’s saying something
Land Rover
Largely considered a rough and tumble brand, Land Rover might be expectected to be churning out mountain bikes and the like. But this was not the case at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
Instead the firm rolled out a Range Rover Evoque-branded concept road bike, dripping with carbonfibre. We particularly like the aero-profiled carbonfibre wheels. Not much use on a wet day on the school run, though.
Honda
Honda, as you’re surely aware, builds quite a few motorcycles on the side, but it has shied away somewhat from building any commercially available push bikes. That doesn’t mean it hasn’t built bicycles at all, though.
The short-lived Honda RN-01 G-Cross pictured here is a dedicated downhill mountain bike produced exclusively for professional racers. An awesome piece of kit.
Spyker
The Dutch supercar brand Spyker may have had its troubles, but it certainly knows how to turn out products that combine luxury and elegance. This is the official Spyker bicycle.
Called the Koga Spyker Aeroblade, it’s built in co-operation with Koga-Miyata, it features a titanium frame, wheels and mudguards made from aluminium glass fibre coated carbon composite, and the seat and handgrips are made with the finest Royal Dutch Tanners leather. Just 50 of the bikes were made
Lamborghini
As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations in 2013, Lamborghini decided finally to do something about all those emissions from its supercars. Which is to say it got together with the bicycle builder BMC and produced this mega-looking road bike.
Special edition Lambos never come cheap, and this is no exception – the asking price was €25,000. Which is around R360,000 at current exchange rates.
Maserati
Compared to the Lamborghini bike, this Maserati effort was a bargain. Launched in 2011 and limited to 200 examples, these were made-to-measure by Montante Cicli rather than off-the-shelf sizes, yet cost a remarkably minimal €3,600 (approximately R50,000).
On the other hand, it is only a hipster-friendly single-speed, built to one of Montante’s early designs. The Maserati 8CTF part references the 70th anniversary of Wilbur Shaw’s victory at the Indy 500 in a car of the same name – hence the number one, and the 1930s style Maserati logo. I want one
Enjoy!

Calling all sparkies- where to buy electrical plug for wiring harness?
Hi all,
Not BMW related, but the plug for my coil pack on my Ute is quite corroded. At some point it will most probably disintegrate, I don't want to get to that point.
It's a 6-pin plug, with flat pins. See pics below. (Note this was when I first discovered the problem, I've since cleaned up the plug and insulated the exposed pins with heat shrink etc).
Does anyone know of a place where I can get a new plug?
Thanks
