What to look out for? I am looking at purchasing a f10 520d

Hi everyone,

Would really appreciate any input for any f10 520d owners, thank you in advance!!

I am looking at buying a 2012, 520d,f10. With between 100k kms on the clock to 150k km's on the clock.
I would appreciate any advice on the following;
-running costs
- tyres costs
-how much a tank costs
- what the range on a diesel tank is on these vehicles. From my research, I should be getting about 900km on a single tank of diesel. But unsure, would like to get "real world" figures.

Really appreciate the assistance in this regard in advance:-)

Quick question: would a 2017 F22 support bluetooth audio streaming if it has business nav or no nav at all? If so, can you change songs via the iDrive scroll wheel?

I'm quite used to streaming from Google Music in my current car where I flick through songs via the steering wheel (i.e. without fiddling with my phone while driving). Just want to be sure I'll have the same experience with a BMW.

Vanos timing symptoms - 1993 E36 325i + 3.73 diff

$

Dear BMW familia,

I've recently had the vanos unit replaced. However, I'm doubting whether the timing is correct.

Preinstall symtomps:

* Low mid range torque.
* Very high fuel consumption (15 L/100 highway).
* Rough idle.

Upon seeing the old unit I saw the plausible cause of these symtomps. The vanos piston that the solenoid engages was jammed in a certain position.

I purchased a good second hand vanos, replaced the seals (beisan auto seal kit) and since my car is pre-1995 model I've added the leaf spring and additional thrust washer with extended studs to the intake cam. These are the results thereof:

* Slight to not noticeable power increase.
* consumption dropped to 13L/100. Which is still high.
* Idle has changed completely. Much smoother and silent. Revs up smoothly. Can hardly hear the engine anymore.
* The rev limiter now sounds like a high frequency machine gun with no breaks in between.

My concerns are whether the vanos was correctly installed. ''Turn both sprockets far right and the instant you turn left (counter clockwise) whilst holding the vanos in place, the vanos sucks in''. What if the vanos was pushed in after that instant the sprockets begun turning left.

Is my timing correct or am I worrying unessesarily??

Regarding the consumption is the consumption correct with the 3.73 diff ?? Keep in mind that the urban consumption reaches a scary 28L/100.

Forgive me for the long post. Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Yeah,
Danny went out of his way to find me a silly 80 bucks caliper clip.

I mean seriously...
Many or most guys would just brush it off as small clip and aim for the bigger customers.

We need more dudes like this.
Will definitely recommend him!

Thanks Danny, will chat later.

So you are sleeping on Saturday in to Sunday. Its around 2:47am when your wife's phone rings. Its your boss and he is looking for you, very panicked and wondering if you are okay... She hands you the phone you speak to him to find out that apparently you sent him a WhatsApp saying you are in trouble and you need money, he needs to send you R1500 e-wallet you will pay him back.

You pick up your phone and its saying No network. Can't access WhatsApp on Wifi or do anything that needs mobile data because the sim card is dead. Then more and more people start calling your wife to ask if you are okay, your brother, mother, friends, work colleagues.

Then it dawns on you, your number has been hijacked/ported without your knowledge and people so far have been scammed over R10k in e-wallets. None of them want their money or are blaming you for the loss but they have learnt an important lesson to always call before sending money.

Anyways you call Capitec and ABSA to cancel your cards and block everything immediately. Call Cell C to ask WTF, they tell you they can't do anything they received a port request and actioned it to MTN. Contact MTN and they say the number is not yet with MTN and they can't even see the porting process. Cell C can't tell you who or when that request was initiated.

Try to go back to sleep as you can't do anything further but people keep calling to ask if you are okay and if you got the money.

I have never been hijacked or had a house break in ever. I was robbed once in Joburg at Park station more than 10 years ago and I got that same feeling. Felt naked, unprotected, vulnerable and open to the world.

I am a Network Security Engineer with various certificates and I always keep my shit updated, never download apps I don't need or games or anything. My phone has Knox and I always operate inside it. There is nothing on my phone after checking it over and over that is not supposed to be there. Also Sim Swap at night over the weekend and soo fast?

How did they do a sim swap? how did they have access to my WhatsApp or my Contacts? Skit

They did try to access my bank accounts but they got blocked after too many attempts.

He isn't a vendor and it is about a Hyundai, but I would like to call out the exceptional service and support given by @Nick

I had an issue with the airbag on my wife's Elantra. Nick went out of his way to help me resolve it, troubleshooting on whatsapp, giving advice on what to try, negotiating great parts prices and labour rates and I managed to also get a brand new steering wheel for good measure. I never thought I would set foot in Hyundai Sandton again, but in Nick's hands, it all went well. We desperately need someone like Nick to work in parts and service at a BMW dealer soon LMFAO

Today, BMW announces the updated 2020 X1 Sports Activity Vehicle. Since its introduction in 2015, the X1 has gone on to become BMW’s best-selling X vehicle worldwide. In the U.S., the X1 is the third most popular X model, behind the X3 and X5.

The updated X1, available in front-wheel drive X1 sDr28i and all-wheel drive X1 xDr28i versions offers one of the roomiest cabins in its class combined with the technology, performance, comfort and agility attributes which make up the heart of all the models in BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle line.

New exterior features
The latest version of the BMW X1 SAV receives more modern, updated exterior styling to reflect the design details found in its newer, larger siblings, such as the X3, X5 and X7. New, optional, LED headlights with hexagonal iconography are complemented by new LED fog lights. The BMW kidney grills feature a new, sculptured design with larger openings. Changes to the front and rear bumper design are highlighted by sharper lines and larger openings with integrated LED fog lights and give the 2020 BMW X1 its more modern look.

Towards the rear of the vehicle, new tinted LED taillights with L-shaped light bars accentuate the wider appearance of the exterior. The tailpipes have grown by 20mm, now 90mm in diameter.

The M Sport Package features a new, redesigned and more aggressive aerodynamics package including a new front bumper, side skirts, wheel arch trim, and rear diffuser in body color.

New interior features
When opening the front door, the driver is greeted by a new two-tone LED “X1” welcome projection. Inside the cabin, the driver and passengers are able to interface with the 2020 BMW X1 via either the standard 6.5 inch central control display screen with iDrive 6, Navigation and Apple CarPlay Compatibility or the new optional 8.8 inch screen with upgraded navigation.

The instrument panel and floor mats features new, decorative contrast stitching while choosing the optional Dakota leather interior adds color-matched lower dashboard and door handles surfaces.

A new electronic gear selector switch connects to an updated version of the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.

New colors
Three new metallic colors have been added to the options list: Storm Bay metallic, Jucaro Beige and Misano Blue metallic. Estoril Blue has been removed.
Standard, non-metallic carryover colors include Alpine White and Jet Black. Carryover optional metallic paints include Black Sapphire Metallic, Glacier Silver Metallic, Mineral White Metallic, Mineral Grey Metallic, 3 Sparkling Brown Metallic, Dark Olive Metallic, Mediterranean Blue Metallic and Sunset Orange Metallic.

Power and performance
The 2020 BMW X1 is powered by the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine (SULEV rated) from BMW’s family of modular engines. Power output is 228 hp @ 5,000 – 6,000 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,450 - 4,500 rpm. Full torque is available in the low and mid-range, where the majority of daily driving takes place, allowing for quick and immediate acceleration when needed. Acceleration from 0 – 60 mph is accomplished in 6.3 seconds for the all-wheel drive X1 xDrive28i and 6.6 seconds for the X1 sDrive28i.

The 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission in the 2020 BMW X1 features revised gear ratios for improved performance and offers fast and almost imperceptible shifts, improving comfort for the driver and passengers. A Sport Automatic transmission and steering wheel mounted shift paddles are included when the optional M Sport Package is selected.

The BMW xDrive system, available on the X1 xDrive28i, works with the DSC Dynamic Stability Control system to transfer power to the rear wheels when it is needed, to reduce understeer in turns, improve traction when going uphill, on slippery surfaces and during more spirited driving.

Wheels and Tires
New design 18 inch Y-spoke bi-color and black wheels replace the previous Y-spoke wheel design. A new 19 inch M Double-spoke wheel replaces an outgoing 19 inch Y-spoke wheel design.

Howz'it Gents.

I wonder if someone could help. My blower motor suddenly stopped working about a week ago. I checked all the fuses, all seems ok. I pulled it out, tested it on a 12v battery, motor works but it doesn't work on the car.
There is no rust and the motor turns with no effort. Bmw East Rand did the blower control recall on the 28th of March.
Any Ideas?

So I was just starting the car up since it’s been standing since Monday and when I turned it on I saw a weird clock on top of the inspection KM and started to the car to heat it up... after a while I switched it off and it did the same thing just “ON” the ignition switch..... I googled and got two possibilities, either the braked fluid, coolant or both needs to be changed

So where do I buy brake fluid and how much? This will be my first time doing this DIY Tiptoe

Certified Pre-Owned vs Used Cars

$

Why buy a used car instead of a new car?
It goes without saying that the majority of people in South Africa can't afford to buy brand new cars. Everyone is looking for the best deals possible in terms of getting the most car for the least amount of money. Quite often, the buyer can buy a better spec’d used car for the price of a new car. An example of this is that a new Datsun Go is in the R150 000 price range. In that price range, you could also get a 2016 Honda Ballade with around 80 000km on the clock. When buying a used car from a car dealership you will often see cars advertised as pre-owned and in this article why will unpack the difference between pre-owned and “normal” used cars for sale from dealerships.

Certified Pre-Owned
Certified pre-owned cars undergo the manufacturer's testing to ensure that it still meets the manufacturer's standards set out for the car when it was first purchased new. Most of the time, these cars won't be very old and are the same car brand as the dealership selling it.

The dealership will normally do multipoint car check, check the accident history, do any reconditioning if need and cars sold that no longer have any of its new car warranty or service/maintenance plan left will be sold with a limited 24 months / 40 000km warranty or service/maintenance plan from the same manufacturer (not an extended car warranty). Roadside assistance is also commonly included for complete peace of mind and hassle-free motoring to you the buyer.

[Image: pre-owned-cars-5c761dd0595f6_6099340589.jpg]

These days, many cars are traded in after a lease period like Mercedes-Benz agility finance and could be good deals as certified pre-owned cars.

Pros of buying Pre-owned

Peace of Mind
By buying a certified pre-owned, you can be satisfied that experts thoroughly checked the car before getting a stamp of approval. If anything happens, they will be liable to sort it out. Buyers also naturally trust OEM dealerships more than used car dealerships. Most dealerships, such as Land Rover offer a standard warranty on all the pre-owned cars that they sell and give a minimum 2 years/ 60,000 km warranty, as well as 2 years, 24/7 roadside assist. They also do an inspection on up to 165 checks on the car to ensure that it is in good working order. Other companies like VW don’t offer a warranty on pre-owned cars, and it is up to the buyer to purchase a warranty at an extra cost. Buyers should check with the dealer what warranties if any are offered on the car they wish to buy.

Saving Money
Cars lose value the moment they leave the showroom from new. Sometimes buying a certified pre-owned car means that you can get a car that's only been slightly used for much less than the same new car, and in most cases have at least some form of warranty. If the certified pre-owned car is relatively new, there might even be an existing service or maintenance plan which will be a further saving on expenses. Some manufacturers, like Land Rover, offer standard warranties on approved cars, while others like VW don’t offer warranties

Resale Value
Most people don’t buy a car as an investment and look for the best resale value possible. Provided the car continues to be taken to the brand dealer for servicing and repairs. If the car isn’t going to the brand dealership, it should at least be going to an RMI approved service centre.

Easier for people without car knowledge
Not everyone knows the nitty-gritty details of what to look for or watch out for when buying a car. There are many people out there that are young or have never bought a car before who just want to buy a good, reliable car without spending too much effort. For those people, it could be better buying from a brand dealer.

Easier to finance
Since the car is coming from the dealer and is often a late model with low mileage, it’s easier to get vehicle finance than with an older used car.

Cons of buying pre-owned

Higher Price
Typically the price of a certified pre-owned car will be higher than the price of the equivalent used-car from private used car dealers. It costs time and money to approve the car, and the dealer also adds their mark-up.

Fewer savings
In some cases, the price difference between the new car and the certified pre-owned isn't worth the difference in price, as well as the difference in warranty. Sometimes there might be only one year left of the warranty or maintenance plan left. Considering this, it's always advisable to calculate the costs of further maintenance when looking at the price. Sometimes it can pay to get a third party extended warranty to give additional peace of mind, after all, replacing parts such as transmissions, turbos, etc. can be exorbitant.

Lemon Law
Regardless of how well the car is checked, there’s always the chance that the certified pre-owned is a “lemon” and will give problems in the future. Certified pre-owned also means having complete faith in the mechanic who checked the car, and with the possibility of human error, some issues on the car might go undetected. Dealers are also out there to make sales and sometimes don’t give the customer all the details about the car.

Used Cars
This can be a complicated area to navigate, especially for people without sound car knowledge. Going this route also involves a great deal of trust in the used car dealership or individual who’s selling the car. There will always be trustworthy buyers, as well as untrustworthy sellers out there and the onus is on the buyer to research and do his homework. After all, there are some good deals out there, as well as many traps.

Pros of buying used

Lower Price
Most of the time, the used car will be cheaper than the certified pre-owned car because there aren't any checks involved, and the used car shop will probably add less of a mark-up compared to the OEM dealership. If the seller is an individual, there won't be any mark-up and the price might be even lower.

Ability to Negotiate
Some OEM dealers have the ability to negotiate on the prices of the cars on offer depending on the dealer, and the car on offer. Used car sales floors and individuals often have prices which are negotiable to an extent and the price can be lowered even further in some cases.

It could be exactly like the certified pre-owned car
Of course the certified pre-owned cars have been checked, but in essence, there are many unchecked cars that still meet the same criteria. It's possible for the buyer to take the car to a brand dealership or Dekra centre for a multipoint check and then take out a third party extended maintenance plan. Again this depends on the car itself, and the mechanic that is checking the car. When going this route, it's best to ensure that whoever is checking the car has the correct diagnostic tools and is qualified to work on that particular car. Getting a mechanic without the right tools or knowledge of the car is just asking for trouble.

More Options
Certified pre-owned cars usually are fairly new, so many older cars don't qualify. When it comes to used cars age doesn't matter, and depending on the buyer's tastes and budget, the range is almost limitless. This unlimited pool of cars can also be a disadvantage because older cars mean more cars that could have problems.

Cons of buying used

No guarantees
Most of the time there is no guarantee that the car will perform without a problem when bought used. If something happens, the dealer has obligation to sort it out due to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) which states that all goods including cars “are of good quality, free from defects and in good working order, and will be durable and usable for a reasonable period of time.” While the buyer is protected by the law, this can often be a grey area and can lead to disputes. Keep in mind that used car dealers and individuals also sell cars that still have OEM warranties, service and maintenance plans. Since the manufacturer is still responsible for those plans, there is some form of warranty.

Cars with voided warranties.
There may be some late model cars that look like attractive buys, but if the previous owner didn't use the prescribed maintenance or service plan, the warranty could be voided, leaving maintenance and repair costs solely with the new owner. Without knowing for sure how the car was maintained, it can leave a lot of uncertainty for the new buyer. Keep in mind that some used cars are cheap and easy to service.

Inconvenience
Even if you find that fantastic lady-driven car that only went to the shops and back, the process is still more complicated than just going the dealership and buying a certified pre-owned car. For the used car you will have to get the VIN number checks to find out the history of the car. Then get a mechanic to go back and check it for you, maybe even arrange with the seller to take the car for an inspection. If the car passes the tests, then it comes down to haggling over the price and eventually making a deal. This is before the paperwork starts. It’s much easier to buy a certified pre-owned car.

More knowledge required
When buying a used car there are so many things to look for. Buyers need to check the body for any signs of an accident, as well as checking out all the other aspects of the car hoping that they don’t miss something. Even with a mechanic on hand, the check is only as good as the mechanic’s skills, or sometimes diagnostic tools. With a certified pre-owned car, the car has already passed all the checks to the manufacturer’s standards.

At the end of the day, both buying used and certified pre-owned have their own advantages and disadvantages, and it’s up to the buyer which route to take. Buying certified pre-owned gives that extra peace of mind, and is easier for people with less technical car knowledge, but comes at a price. Buying used can save a lot of money, but only if done correctly.

When buying and vehicle it’s worth doing a VIN number check to ensure that everything’s in order. Using a Vehicle valuation tool can also help to ensure that you are getting the best deal possible. Brakes

Hi guys,

So it's time for me to do the rear brake pads, and I wondering if anyone has any recent feedback regarding brake pads? I have searched and the latest I can find is from about a year ago. With regards to brands, I have the following quotes:

Agents: R1084 incl sensor

GW: Febi Bilstein: R826 incl sensor (the sensor is about R190)

Midas: Ferodo: R750 excl sensor

Grandmark: Deselra: R431 excl sensor

This is the first time I've heard about Deselra, does anyone perhaps have a review on them? I've read mixed reviews regarding Ferodo, with some claiming they are too hard and wear down very quickly.

Any advice is highly appreciated.

Hey Forum,

Haven't been here in a while...

My car slams itself into gear when I get on the throttle but not always, it's especially noticeable in comfort mode at lower speeds. It also happens if you emergency break heavily and get back on the throttle, feels like something is slamming very hard and makes a noticeable noise. I think it has always done it to a degree but its become way more violent in the past few months and seems to be getting worse. My LSD was replaced a year ago after it broke and I have a suspicion that this could be related to the LSD again?

I was wondering if anybody has had a similar problems with their M2/M3/M4?

Hi Guys,

I am thinking of selling My 2011 X3 F25 2.0d but it will only be on this Forum if I do as it will be a very reluctant sale based on medical reasons as my wife has a spinal condition and I need that pull out on the M/sport seat my X3 is not a M/sport, so going to "maybe" buy another Forum members X5 as it will afford her more comfort.

My 2011 X3 F25 2.0d is in pristine condition with only 71,600km on board, the M/plan ended Aug last Year and we did every conceivable preventative maintenance on it through the M/plan before it expired as I know the workshop manager at a BMW dealer here in CPTN, so from the timing chain which constitutes pulling the motor out was done, new rotors new discs all the way around all filters etc ……… I have documented every thing I have done on this car and at 59 I was going to retire with it but now with my wife's condition as I said I will need that extra comfort as we cannot drive far now!

I have spent a lot of money on this car and will unfortunately not get it back but one of those things …….. this car is spotless as well as OEM 19inch mags and tyres which cost me R30k so yup really thinking hard on this one!!!

E90 LCi Battery drain

Hi all,

About a month ago I got this warning....

• CC-ID 415 – Battery Discharge Rate High

It disappeared after about 2 start ups and then popped up again yesterday and its disappeared again now. I dont have a multimeter to test but I've used the hidden menu options to monitor the voltage.

At cold startup this morning: 14.8v
Testing turning on lights, radio, ac dropped this slightly to about 14.4v

Driving for about 20 mins with radio and lights on it fluctuated between 14.0 and 14.5v

At my destination i switched off and it slowly dropped to around 12.1v.

Does it seem like time to replace the battery or should i be investigating what could be causing the high discharge rate?

Lastly, this is the battery currently installed. I am not sure when last this has been replaced. Can anyone confirm whether this is fitted with the IBS?

Help with Carbon Splitter Repairs

Hi Guys

Need some help regarding where to go to repair these E92 M3 Carbon Splitters. I ordered it online for my e90 320D but got the wrong parts.

Its actually just the one splitter that looks like it needs repairing. It looks like there is a crack in the epoxy coating and it just needs to be recoated as the carbon fibre itself isnt damaged.

Is there any hope of repairing these? If so where do I go? I'm based in Cape Town. Ideally I'd just like to repair it and see if I can get anything for it after. If not I'll just donate it to any fanatic willing to collect smile bounce

Good Day All

I am new to posting threads on the Fanatics forum, i previously owned a few BMW's but didn't post or update. i have used the forum previously (very helpful technical details) but haven't been very active in terms of posting or replying. I am hoping that will change.

I recently acquired a 2003 e39 525iM Touring, the vehicle was in cape town and i actually bought it blind (there's a crazy story behind it).

The car was originally bought in Nelspruit from the then SJW Motors, and has since made a full circle to Cape Town and back to Nelspruit.

The Car has been in one family since new. it has a few minor issues (usually associated with an e39 and some), but overall I am really pleased with the condition
