Hi
While waiting for my car to cool after doing a radiator flush I decided to Google how to test temp and fan on a e90,
Put key in, press start button, once dash lights are on, press the reset odometer button and hold till it brings up the hidden menu display,
The first menu should look like this,
Add the digits up, in my case it adds to 20, then press and hold till it goes to the second menue the ki test, keep pressing till you get to menu 19, it will say lock on,
At the bottom of lock on you will see it says code and 00,
Now keep pressing till u get to the number you added, so I pressed till it said code 20, it will kick you back to the first menu,
Press again and hold till it goes to second menu the ki test and keep pressing till menu 7, wait a second and bang your temp,
Mine orignally was on 65, car was cold, so I started it and kept it on a rev,
As the temp was rising I kept going to see if the fan kicked in, at 96 the fan started spinning,
Hope this helps u guys,
