Albert Venter – the man at the helm of the controversial “R699 per month” car scheme – leads a lavish life which many of his customers can only dream of.

Parked behind glass garage doors visible from the street outside his palatial home in the Pretoria suburb of Mooikloof, are his Ferrari FF, Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, Maserati Spyder and Nissan Infiniti SUV.

Venter started the Satinsky general dealership in 2006 and put the “R699 per month” scheme on the market in 2008.

Its huge success allowed him to take regular extravagant overseas holidays to Britain and Switzerland, and hire a butler who prepares him healthy meals.

But now the scheme, in which thousands of South African car owners have participated and which is run by Venter’s company, is on the verge of collapse.

Two weeks ago Wesbank CEO Chris de Kock described it bluntly as a pyramid scheme. But unlike Wesbank, which in 2011 refused to do business with Satinsky, other banks have until recently been happy to do so.

Satinsky now blames Hong Kong-based company, Blue Lakes Trading and Promotions, for its problems.

Satinsky says it was only acting as a “managing agent” for Blue Lakes in South Africa, but Venter’s lawyer, Craig Thompson, and Thompson’s father-in-law, former apartheid-era spy Gerard Ludi, are the respective representative and director of Blue Lakes.

Ludi told City Press’ sister publication Rapport that Blue Lake’s business model is “definitely not a pyramid scheme”. He insists the company actually exists.

“The concept was imported to South Africa from China. We had high hopes that it would work here and could then be exported to the rest of the world,” Ludi said. He said the Chinese sponsors withdrew because

of negative publicity and corruption in the scheme.

“I’m bitterly disappointed with the results,” he said.

Satinsky’s clients have had serious problems over the past few months. The way the scheme works is that car owners get a significant portion of their monthly instalment back by showing that they have travelled a certain number of kilometres in their vehicles, which are covered in advertising.

Now that the scheme has collapsed, they have not been receiving their full rebates and face having to pay the full monthly instalments on their vehicles. Venter though continues to live a luxurious lifestyle.

Deeds office records reveal that he bought his Mooikloof home for R11.5 million in December 2011. He added

to the already tight security in the gated estate by building huge walls and erecting a guardhouse at the entrance which is staffed around the clock. His eight bedrooms look on to a swimming pool and a vast living area features two dining rooms, a private gym, a mini theatre that can seat 16 people and a bar.

City Press interviewed three Satinsky employees who spoke on condition of anonymity. One said that on average, about 80 cars a month were sold in 2009, but by 2012 this number had grown to 800. Another said that aside from overseas trips where he stayed in top hotels, Venter travelled to Knysna where “his accommodation cost no less than R15 000 per night”.

“At this time he became very health conscious. He appointed a personal butler to prepare healthy food for him,” the staff member said.

Venter then came to work with pearly white teeth. “It was clear he had had his face worked on,” he added.

But last November, Satinsky’s financial position changed drastically when Absa refused to continue its involvement with the company. The bank now says the decision was based on “commercial reasons”.

The business was further harmed when the Motor Finance Corporation (MFC), a division of Nedbank’s auto financing, set up tighter credit controls. It became difficult for Satinsky to attract new customers.

Another employee said Satinsky then had to cut staff and the call centre that used to have 54 agents now only had 10. They tried to stop the gaps by making random payments to customers, the employee said.

Last month, hordes of angry customers arrived at the office and call centre in Pretoria East to demand their money. “We had to placate them with promises. He now has a full-time personal bodyguard.”

In June, Satinsky moved to new offices with security gates in the suburb of Faerie Glen, where bouncers stopped the public from entering. “Customers were hysterical with rage at being ignored,” said an employee. “Many of them are now advising each other on Facebook about ways to get rid of the advertising.”

Venter himself has not been seen at his office since March 1, another colleague said.

MFC and Standard Bank only followed Absa’s example last Friday and Monday respectively, and refused to continue to be involved with Satinsky.

When reporters from City Press’ sister publication Rapport visited Venter’s house on Friday, a guard threatened to kill them and chased them away. Venter refused to answer any questions by phone.

Last week he sent a WhatsApp message to several people. It read: “It was a privilege to see you in action. Appreciate everything you have done. Thx. Thanx I dropped you … buy [sic].”

Ferrari test-drive goes horribly wrong

On-board footage from a test-drive of a Ferrari California in Italy shows the moment it all went wrong for the driver.

There's not much detail about the incident, other than the fact that it took place in Maranello, considered the home of the Italian supercar-maker.

The video shows the driver making his way around relatively busy streets, with what appears to be the salesman in the front passenger seat. An apparent friend of the driver's is seated in the back.

Top Gear Festival ‘not making enough money’ says Durban official

DURBAN may be in danger of losing the high-profile Top Gear Festival after a city official said the motoring event had failed to meet financial expectations.

Talks to save the Durban Top Gear Festival are under way between KwaZulu-Natal economic development and tourism MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu, and Top Gear owners and organisers. Top Gear is a British TV series about motor vehicles, and is the most widely watched factual TV programme in the world.

The show is presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. They were all in Durban at the weekend to present the event the city has hosted for the past three years.

"All I can say at this stage is that there are negotiations to save Top Gear. It is still too early speak about (the outcomes of the talks). But (MEC) Mabuyakhulu and the department are doing all they can to save the Top Gear Festival and hopefully the show will be here in 2015," said the MEC’s spokesman, Bheko Madlala.

A city official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the event was not making enough money.

On Sunday, Top Gear Durban organisers’ spokeswoman Alison Fyfe-Turck said she was not at liberty to disclose the show’s financial health. The event’s Saturday leg had done "very well", attended by more than 30,000 paying ticket holders, she said, adding that she was confident the Top Gear event would not be canned. It was held in the 85,000-seat Moses Mabhida stadium.

Philip Sithole, eThekwini municipality’s head of tourism and economic development, said the event had put the city on the map of international destinations for motor sports tourism.

Top Gear organisers and government officials say last year ’s festival was attended by 67,000 car and speed enthusiasts from all over South Africa. Durban hotels had reported near-capacity bookings at the weekend.

A few years ago businessman Tokyo Sexwale’s sponsored A1 Grand Prix motor race in the city was forced to stop after facing a similar problem.

Wanted E90 330d

Hi guys me again

I was initially looking for a N54 135i but have decided to can that idea as I have just done renovations and don't want to stretch my budget further. I am keen on a E90 330d for these reasons
  • Torque
  • Comfort
  • Reliabilty
  • Fuel Economy? What can I expect?

I have read through Colin's thread and some others and seen that I should look out for the following:
  • Front Shocks
  • Injectors
  • Turbo

Auto seems to be the preference too. I have an extended warranty with Hollard on the OPC and if I can transfer it to the BMW that should take care of the turbo and injector worries. I'm sure this has been discussed over and over but I haven't been able to find the answers I'm looking for yet. If you guys could please give your advice it would be appreciated. Also if you could keep your eyes open for decent specimens that would be great. When I find something good I would be really grateful if one of the experts could come with me to inspect the vehicle. I'm looking for a white auto model for < R160 000. I realize that the mileage will be rather high on a vehicle for that price but I am willing to live with it as long as the car is mechanically and electrically sound.

DIY: e46 CCV lower breather hose replacement

$
0
0
This is apparently a common fault on the e46 and as I found out, the cause of the erratic idle at cold temps.

Begin by removing the Airbox and upper intake hose. No need to remove the lower one (Yellow circle).

The red X shows where you will be working.

Remove the connection (marked blue) by disconnecting the plug and removing it from its rubber holder by pulling towards the airbox side.

Remove green plug as well.

[Image: 20140712_115719_zpsv5cnxqv2.jpg?t=1405323240]

This is a pic after I removed the dipstick holder. Begin by removing the bolt showed at the yellow circle. Then remove the hoses attahced to the dipstick holder with clips marked with blue circle.

Remove the lower breather hose by pulling up. Also marked with green arrow in this pic.

[Image: 20140712_115814_zpsp1potims.jpg?t=1405322176]

The red arrow shows where the dipstick holder is inserted. Simply remove by pulling up. Be careful and make sure all hoses are disconnected from the dipstick holder.

[Image: 20140712_115708_zps6kffjeem.jpg?t=1405236955]

Dipstick holder removed. Notice the gunk. And remember the O ring.

It is actually not necessary to remove the dipstick holder if you just gonna replace the lower breather hose but I figured I might as well clean the inside of the dipstick tube while I am at it.

Remove the two bolts at the power steering resevoir. (Red)

[Image: 20140712_115722_zpsoxhys3zy.jpg?t=1405322986]

The green line is merely to show where the upper breather hose is located. (I also replaced that hose a week ago).

Remove the plugs marked with red circles. This is for better access. Green shows the upper breather hose again and the blue is just to show where your VANOS oil line connects if you want to replace that as well.

[Image: 20140712_115733_zpsr3mqsjzv.jpg?t=1405322542]

The lower CCV breather hose is located below the upper breather hose marked with green and the red 8-figure in the above pic.

Here you will need to use your hands to feel around.

Start my getting the clip of the lower breather hose. The attachment has a plastic ring the releases when you compress the circular attachment. Feel for the ridges on the circular attachment, press towards is other (pinch) and carefully pull downwards. You dont want to break the CCV now. When you hear it clip loose, simply slide it out the bottom where it connected to the dipstick holder.

And looky here:

New and old next to each other. Cost R300 with 10% discount.

Now exactly like you took it out, just thread it from here in the below pic up towards the CCV. Feel around and press the hose up onto the attachment of the CCV till you hear a distinct click. Tug lightly to make sure its secure.

[Image: 20140712_115708_zps6kffjeem.jpg?t=1405236955]

Thread the dipstick holder back in and press firmly down till it pops back in the hole marked with red arrow above.

Attach the lower breather hose to the dipstick. I also used a hose clamp just for extra precautionary measures.

Attach connections and (blue) and tighten nut back in (yellow).

Reconnect and replace everything like you took it off.

Result:
Idle came down from 1000RPM to a constant 750RPM.
Almost no idle bounces on cold startup.

One mystery solved.

Think I just need to replace the plugs and all will be well again.

Also see attached tracklog I made after installation

Maybe someone could highlight some issues they pick up from it.

Hi Guys, I took the Plastic Cover off to take a Peek at My 330d Engin and was shocked. Especially since the Car went for a Service less then 2 months ago in May. Most of the Engin was covered in dust, dirt and what appear to be old oil. Can I use my local Machie to Clean the Engin or should I take it to the dealer. R1 billion government IT contract mess
Government has written off R1 billion spent on an IT contract in favour of a new contract, the Sunday Independent newspaper reports
Staff Writer July 13, 2014

There goes your tax money Thumbs

Government has written off R1 billion which was spent on National Treasury’s Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS). This is according to a Sunday Independent report.

The report states that government scrapped the nearly complete R1 billion IT project in favour of another new project which could cost another R3 billion.

The newspaper added that the South African State Information Technology Agency (SITA) may also face expensive legal battles to get out of contracts with many service providers.

A spokesperson for SITA and the Treasury said that the decision to change the solution was “strategic”.

BMI-T analyst Tertia Smit recently said that Government is spending billions on ICT at national and provincial level, but to assure the most effective use of these funds the various arms of government need to communicate with one another.

This, she said, was to ensure effective management of projects, lack of overlap or redundant efforts and expenses, and that projects are prioritised and executed in order of importance.

Government has also been at work on a number of large ICT projects in recent years, many of which have gotten attention for all the wrong reasons.

“Systems like the Treasury’s IFMS, Home Affairs’ Who Am I Online and Transport’s eNatis have all faced problems of governance and capacity alongside questions over SITA’s involvement,” she said.

Communications minister conned SABC board
New communications minister Faith Muthambi lied to the SABC board in Hlaudi Motsoeneng’s appointment, the Sunday Times reports.
Staff Writer July 13, 2014

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasti...eport.html

New communications minister Faith Muthambi lied to the SABC board to appoint Hlaudi Motsoeneng as SABC COO, the Sunday Times reported.

According to the newspaper Muthambi ignored the fact that no formal settlement was reached with former SABC COO Mvuzo Mbebe, which means that Muthambi may be in contempt of court.

Muthambi announced Motsoeneng’s appointment in Pretoria on 8 July 2014, saying she had made the appointment following a recommendation by the SABC board.

She said on Thursday 10 July 2014 that Motsoeneng was cleared of all wrongdoing by a legal firm before being permanently appointed as the public broadcaster’s new chief operations officer

“The appointment of the independent law firm by the SABC board to investigate all the issues raised by the public protector was the most responsible way to deal with the public protector’s report,” Muthambi said.

“The SABC board and myself are satisfied that the report by the appointed firm of attorneys has cleared Mr Motsoeneng of any wrongdoing and therefore there was nothing before me that suggested that I should not confirm the appointment.”

However, the Sunday Times reported that Titus Mchunu from Mchunu Attorney’s, linked to this investigation by the newspaper, distanced himself from the opinion.

Motsoeneng’s appointment drew sharp criticism from the public and from political parties, especially after Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report that he is not fit for the position.

“The appointment of Mr Motsoeneng constitutes gross disregard of a series of investigations and audits into the SABC relating to governance and administration,” SACP spokesman Alex Mashilo said in a statement.

Lobby group AfriForum said the appointment indicated the SABC board had “refrained from heeding” the Public Protector’s earlier proposals.

Deputy CEO Alana Bailey said in a statement the move was “a further example of disrespect for the Constitution and constitutional institutions that exist to protect the public against abuse of power and mismanagement”.

Last week, political parties called for Motsoeneng to be relieved of his duties. This was after Motsoeneng suggested journalists should have a licence to practice, as in the medical and law professions.

A Sunday Independent report said that Muthambi will be hauled before parliament to explain her decision to appoint Motsoeneng.

She may also have to explain herself to an internal ANC committee because of pressure from its alliance partners, Cosatu and the SACP.

Madonsela will launch a new investigation into Motsoeneng following his permanent appointment to the SABC COO post.

Nexen N8000 tyre review

Tyre fitted to: 2007 335i MSport
Tyres size: 255/35/18
Speed rating: Y (300kms/h)
Type: Non RFT
Category: Mid Range brand Ultra high performance (as per: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/ )
Price: R2970 (incl: balancing, fitting and alignment)

So Saturday morning I had my rear tyres replaced (Pirelli P Zero RFT) as the one was in a really bad condition, due to poor alignment (done by BMW) the inside of the rear tyres were badly worn out exposing the steel belt on the one tyre.

My initial choice of replacement tyres were the Falkens, however there are no Falkens available in the country at the moment, stock would only come through end July 2014. So I had to search for a couple of alternatives. My search led me to the Kenda and the Nexen brands.

The Kendas were a directional tyre so they were a little noisy as I expected to hear from the reviews from some of the forum members and the reviews on the web. But overall some good reviews.

Then I stumbled upon a brand called Nexen, the specific tyre I looked at was the Nexen N8000, which had the specs needed for the 335i in terms of weight and speed ratings.

A lot of the reviews that I have seen on the web leading up to the week that I needed new rubber, convinced me to go with the Nexen. The thread patterns are similar to the Conti SC 3 and they were on special at Mintys.

Noise Levels: Look the Pirelli’s are were worn out bad, but if I compare the Nexen N8000 to my Pirelli’s a year ago in terms of noise levels, the Nexen’s win. This could be due to the fact that they are non RFT tyres and have more flex in them.

Balancing the tyres: No issue’s at all when it came to balancing the tyres.

Tyre construction: It’s a soft tyre I must confess and don’t expect it to last all that long on the 335i. But considering I only use the car on the weekends. It suits my needs. Wifey doesn’t go looking for races over the weekdays either…….. I think………. and only travels 22kms a day

Handling: When launching hard, the traction control light would flicker with the Pirelli’s but again they were worn out. With the Nexen’s no traction control lights flickering (traction control on and the car is an Auto). Around the corners they feel very safe. However RFT’s do win the cornering section of this test due to the stiffer sidewalls. But this doesn’t mean the 335 goes drifting into every corner with the Nexen’s and I don’t through my car into corners.

Overall I am impressed with these tyres and will be replacing the front with Nexens N8000 at the end of the month, I knew I was not going to go with your high end tyres, because honestly, my car is bone stock and not taken on the track, for everyday use they are great and thus far I am happy with them. For obvious reasons a cant comment on wet weather handling due to the lack of wet weather in JHB. However the reviews I have seen on the tyres wet weather handing are positive.

I hope this review helps with any future tyre choices.

DIY: BMW E90 320i Oil fiter housing profile gasket replacement

Hi guys,

While doing a quicke inspection on my car's engine bay, I noticed there was a leak under the oil filter housing. I immediately thought it would make a nice project for me to post my first DIY here as I did not post the DIY when I replaced the rear pads on my car. I hope it will help someone out there. This is first DIY I'm posting, so please excuse me if not to your standards, the format is wrong, or (most of all) the tech language is not on par. I was also a bit lazy in taking pictures of the initial steps. So here goes...

Tools & parts needed are as follows:

1 x 8mm socket/spanner (& wrench of course)
1 x T20 torx bits/screw driver
1 x Medium size srew driver
1 x 10mm socket/spanner (A socket extension came in handy for me here)
1 x T30 torx bits/screw driver
1 x Oil filter wrench
1 x Oil filter housing profile gasket
2 x Cleaning rags

The leak in question:

- First steps for me, I disconnected the negative terminal of the car's battery (10mm). And then proceeded to remove the Microfilter housing & engine cover (8mm) on the intake mainfold side.
- Unscrew the oil filter cap, but don't remove it let the oil drain into the engine.
- Remove the air intake by unscrewing the 3 T20 torx screws in front, and pulling it off the air filter housing.
- Remove the air filter housing by unscrewing 2 10mm bolts on the right that hold the air filter housing to the car & the flathead screw that holds the clip that joins the throttle & housing via the air duct. I chose the one on the throttle side.
- Remove the throttle by unscrewing the 4 10mm bolts that hold it & disconnect the cable that clips into it (I think it's the MAF cable).

Engine bay with throttle removed:

I sprayed some of this into the throttle & let it dry while I continued:

- Remove the heat exchanger by unscrewing the 4 T30 torx screws that hold it to the oil filter housing. I let it rest on the pipes going into the radiator & did not remove it completely from the car

Heat exchanger removed:

By now most of the oil in the oil filter has been drained. Get a rag to catch any dripping oil & remove the oil filter cap with the filter intact.

- Remove the oil filter housing by unscrewing the 3 10mm bolts that hold it. The most challenging ones will be the 2 at the back, unless you have small hands like mine. And this is where you will need that socket extension.
- Remove the oil filter housing profile gasket & replace with a new one. Mine was very brittle & broke as I removed it.

Note: Will post more photos as I have trouble uploading them.

Auto box Thermostat E46 330i

How important is that little thermostat under the expansion tank that controls the OIL temp to the auto box oil cooler ...

Found my Expansion tank leaking at the top seam so sourcing parts ( Expansion Tank , Cap , sensor and the thermostat )

Prices from agents not to bad except for the thermo ( R2043.00 )

As this unit most likely breaks when you remove your tank, I might just in case buy a new one or opt to remove it completely but not sure what the side effects will be . The way I see it , this is a normal open thermostat that lets the coolant heat up the AT oil quicker once the AT oil is on temp it closes ....

Or is it the other way around....normally closed for the oil to heat up and opens up to keep the oil cool...

PS Tank R1375.00 OEM a bit scared to go non-OEM.
