Driverside doorknob sticking (E36 328i cab)

Hi all

1996 E36 328i cabriolet, my baby - 140,000 kilometres.
Have looked after her well. She is parked in a garage.

Over the past year or so my driver side doorknob has been acting strangely.

When I lock the car with my remote, the passenger door locks (and its knob goes down), but the driver side knob doesn't. The alarm is armed but the driver door remains unlocked. I have to manually lock it with the key after that.

Also strange behaviour from inside. After driving, if my doors are locked and I take the key out of the ignition and want to get out my car, I usually pull the door handle twice and it unlocks the door. Now it doesn't. It's very stiff. I actually have to first press the unlock button on the remote while inside the car, then I can open the door with one handle pull.

This was an intermittent problem for a few months. It would come and go. Now it seems to be permanent.

Another observation - when I start driving I usually push the knob down with my elbow to lock the doors. Since this problem started I notice that the knob is a little bit stiffer than normal. Same thing if I lock and unlock it from outside manually with the key. It all works but it is as if the knob is a bit stiffer than normal.

At my last BMW dealer service, I mentioned this issue and they said it may be a big job and if I didn't mind using the key, then I should rather just leave it. They didn't appear to be very interested in trying to help. After 10 years or so there, I am starting to get the feeling they don't like me and my old car ;-)

Am wondering what this could be and whether anyone could advise me of someone good to take my car to that could help to fix it without charging the earth. Am in Johannesburg.

PS - I did try searching for this issue first, but I only found things relating to central locking.

While watching one of the series channels last night I saw a shell advertisement stating that they will soon have ethanol at their pumps as an alternative.

Can anyone share clarity on this? Will the ron be higher?

car goes into limp mode

howzit all

Was wondering if anyone has a similar experience and hwat the outcome was. My car was experiencing erratic idling, dropping of revs for no reason and now funny enough going into Ecu limp mode… I had my error codes read and it it came up with misfiring on piston 1 and 3 as well as crank sensor.

The problem is intermittent though and I ad error codes cleared last week and car was perfect…to date have repalced the following:

New Maf unit
Crank sensor
Cam sensor ( intake)

Would have taken the cam sensor exhaust as well but they never had stock…

When we replaced the parts I noticed my vacuum hose was broken so we replaced that as well. Car drove perfect up until yesterday….and it goes back into limp mode with a heavy idle…now power as well…

Any clue as to what this can be without having my codes read again? Only thing I can think of is replacing the cam exahsut sensor….heard from someone it could even be a faulty fuel pump or coil pack…these never bring up error messages…the car normally used to start after 1 swing and now it takes up a few seconds to start….

Any ideas or pointers would be appreciated….would hate to buy incorrect parts and waste more money

Thanks

Hi guys, I need a spare rim for my 2005 E46 320D. It is the 5-stud 15" standard rim. No need for a mag - a steel rim will do. My 2nd hand purchase of this car came without a spare wheel or jack. Any advise where I can buy these will be appreciated. I have already tried Beemo in Pretoria West.

Hi All

I am so pissed, 4 months in to owning my 325Ci the gearbox has packed up. I am looking to buy a reconditioned auto box or at least looking for a reasonable mechanic to remove, overhaul and refit my current gearbox.

I am based in JHB south and I can be contacted via PM

I recently go a quote for R17000.00 +/-..... Holy crap....

Failing to obtain a inexpensive solution to repair I will be forced to sell her at R55.000.00

It must be said that when people who cannot control their life's events and are used as mere pawns in the game of others are a beaten people.

Notice how our Zim neighbours have had a despot rule them for nearly 40 years and he is still in power......against all common sense I propose.

Notice how the Palestinians have had their land stolen by design ( and should you wish to state otherwise please be so kind as to furnish historical tangible proof of King Davids city which they are still looking for......by contrast the Acropolis is still standing to this day) and how the the UN has kept pretty silent in the recent events.

The numbers as reported are staggering some 1700 Palestinians to 60 Israelis.....it boggles the mind........and the world is silent wrapped up in its daily routine whilst children and old people are being murdered.

This is an indictment on humanity as a whole as we have become apathetic to our fellow mans plight.
Where are the sanctions against Israel ?
Where are the sanctions against America?

Hang your head in shame.

World's fastest network would let you download 5375GB of data in 1 second!

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/worlds-fastes...77-11.html

London: Danish researchers claim to have set a new data transfer world record by transmitting over a single optical fibre at an incredible speed of 43 terabits per second.

Researchers at Technical University of Denmark (DTU) used a new type of optical fibre to claim the world data transfer record.

The team has eclipsed the record that was set by researchers at the Karlsruhe Institut fur Technologie, by proving that it is possible to transfer fully 43 terabits per second with just a single laser in the transmitter.

This is an appreciable improvement on the German team's previous record of 32 terabits per second.

The worldwide competition in data speed is contributing to developing the technology intended to accommodate the immense growth of data traffic on the internet, which is estimated to be growing by 40-50 per cent annually.

What is more, emissions linked to the total energy consumption of the internet as a whole currently correspond to more than two per cent of the global man-made carbon emissions - which puts the internet on a par with the transport industry (aircraft, shipping etc), researchers said.

However, these other industries are not growing by 40 per cent a year. It is therefore essential to identify solutions for the internet that make significant reductions in energy consumption while simultaneously expanding the bandwidth.

This is precisely what the DTU team has demonstrated with its latest world record. Researchers have previously helped achieve the highest combined data transmission speed in the world - an incredible one petabit per second - although this involved using hundreds of lasers.

The researchers achieved their latest record by using a new type of optical fibre borrowed from the Japanese telecoms giant NNT.

This type of fibre contains seven cores (glass threads) instead of the single core used in standard fibres, which makes it possible to transfer even more data.

Despite the fact that it comprises seven cores, the new fibre does not take up any more space than the standard version.

The researchers' record result has been verified and presented in what is known as a 'post deadline paper' at the CLEO 2014 international conference.

We'll probably only get this in the year 2056 Icon9

Karting is the kindergarten class for all who wish to graduate to F1, someday…

In the world of karting one region provides the most competitive and pure experience: northern Italy. So, when Porsche imagined it required some new, rather clever, promotional video for its Cayman GTS, a rather red one was driven from Stuttgart to Italy.

The result is a video which redefines what you mean when quoting that automotive cliché: ”go-kart handling.”

With a mid-engined 250kW flat-six, impeccably balanced suspension components and delightfully accurate steering, Cayman GTS is about as agile a Porsche as one can buy.

Statistically, though, its wheelbase of 2.47m remains dauntingly longer than that of the average racing kart, which has front-to-rear wheel spacing of about a metre. Despite this, GTS looks pleasantly at home on a karting track, which probably means you’ll see owners trying to race them at speed in covered parking garages soon…
