Ahrlac: SA-made military plane takes flight... Bravo

Paramount Group has unveiled a military aircraft it says was the first to be fully designed and developed on African soil. The Ahrlac is a manned alternative to unmanned aerial vehicles and, with its pod design, it can be used for anything from surveillance to combat. By Regardt van der Berg.

Paramount Group, Africa’s largest privately owned defence and aerospace business, this week took the wraps off the Ahrlac, a homegrown aircraft that offers a highly configurable payload system that allows it to be transformed quickly based on operational requirements.

The Ahrlac — it stands for “advanced high-performance reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft” — was conceptualised, designed, built and tested in South Africa and was designed from the ground up using industrial computer-aided design software. The process was completely paperless.

“Every single part of the aircraft was pre-designed on a computer, which allowed it to have a jig-less construction,” Ahrlac Holdings CEO Paul Potgieter says.

This means that every part fits together, much like a Meccano set, which saves vast amounts of money and time — especially when exporting it globally. We have made all the tools for production for all sheet-metal pressings and composite parts so it enables us to hit production much quicker than any other aircraft.”

Potgieter was also involved with one of South Africa’s other major military achievements, the Rooivalk attack helicopter, which was developed by Denel. He was the programme manager from concept to first flight on that project between 1984 and 1990.

Now, his son, Paul Potgieter Jr, is following in his footsteps as the programme manager for the Ahrlac.

There are over 60 engineers and technicians involved in the design and manufacturing of the Ahrlac and, since the launch of the project in September 2011, this team has spent over 315 000 man hours completing detailed designs and manufacturing the first prototype.

Ahrlac(3))-640

The Ahrlac consist of 6 000 parts, 98% of which are designed and produced locally by the engineering team.

Talking to TechCentral at the first public appearance of the Ahrlac at this year’s Africa Aerospace and Defence expo, Potgieter Jr says: “We took a completely fresh approach on the type of role this aircraft is intended for. We have moved the engine to the back as the main driver so that we could fly a large cannon in the nose. The pilots also have an unobstructed view as a result.”

Potgieter Jr says the plane can accommodate almost any system, including a camera, radar, Flir ball (thermal imaging) and jamming equipment, in the fuselage without obstruction from an engine. The payload of the pod system in the fuselage is 800kg. Night vision also works better when there is no propeller turning in the front of the plane.

Paramount opted for a Canadian Pratt & Whitney PT6A engine used in the Ahrlac was because every country is able to service it. “It makes maintenance anywhere in the world much easier.”

The Ahrlac also boasts a unique height and positioning of the wings.

Video of the first test flight of the Ahrlac (footage supplied):

“We moved the wings higher off the ground because what we typically see in African operations is that the runways are just jeep tracks and not well maintained. The higher clearance prevents wing damage from fences and the surrounding bush,” Potgieter Jr says. “The wing was also moved back from the cockpit to give pilots good visibility under all circumstances, even when the plane is turning.”

The Ahrlac can stay in the air for more than seven hours, useful for operations that involve patrolling large areas.

The first test flight for the Ahrlac took place on 26 July (see the video) and the first public flight happened on the 8 August. Paramount expects to deliver the first aircraft by the end of next year.

The company is setting up a factory in Pretoria, near the Waterkloof air force base. “We have industrialised the process and can build the aircraft quickly. The first prototype was built in two months. From there we can do it much faster.” — © 2014 NewsCentral Media

Cell C announced today, 19 September 2014, that it will be offering free WhatsApp services to its customers.

“I have said before that we as mobile carriers have to embrace the over the top (OTT) players and partner with them to provide customers with added value,” said Cell C CEO Jose Dos Santos.

“WhatsApp is one of the most popular OTT services on our network. We know that our customers are using it extensively to keep up with family and friends and we could not ignore the opportunity to add value,” said Dos Santos.

Cell C said that it is committed to finding innovative ways to partner with instant messaging services, social media, and VoIP service providers to ensure its customers get the best value and an overall great communications experience.

From 19 October, WhatsApp usage will automatically be free to all existing and new contract customers.

WhatsApp will also be free to all Prepaid customers on MegaBonus, which already offers customers three times the value of their recharge.

Cell C WhatsApp users will be able to send pictures, voice messages, videos, and text messages via WhatsApp absolutely free of charge, and without incurring any data charges.

“This is just the first step in the game; we have much more planned in the social media space. We are embracing these technologies to enrich our own customers’ lives,” said dos Santos.

Forget high-tech gadgets, crime-hit S.A goes for coffins

Many properties in crime-ridden South Africa are secured by electronic burglar alarms and high concrete walls topped with high-voltage electric fences, but in the quaint small diamond mining town of Cullinan, coffins are the latest security gadgets.

Following a spate of robberies in the semi-rural town of around 28,000 people, some residents have found that caskets are keeping burglars at bay.

Tired of the break-ins, a couple that runs a scrap metal trading firm thought they would experiment with a coffin to deter thieves.

From three burglaries a week, they have registered zero since they erected a black coffin among rusting pieces of iron piping strewn around the open-air hectare surrounded with a wire mesh perimeter fencing.

So the low cost and no-frills but quirky idea to protect their wares, must be effective.

"Crime is high," said Rita Gatinho, company manager. "I don't carry guns, am totally against that, what do we do to protect ourselves?"

It started off as joke when a customer came in last year offering to sell them an unused coffin.

"My husband said 'let me just put it up maybe it will help to keep the thieves away,' which it did," said Gatinho. "It's been, wow! I must say touch wood, it's working," she said stretching her hand to the coffin.

Pieces of yellow reflective tape are stuck on the coffin which is gradually decomposing in the sun and the rain.

South Africans last year reported more than 300,000 burglaries at residential and business properties, according to Crime Stats SA -- which collates crime figures released by police.

A few hundreds of metres away from the shop, biker and former prison warder Rusty Pool has converted his treasure chest-shaped trailer into a wooden coffin, coming with all the trimmings of stainless steel handles.

His original idea was not to scare off anyone because there are no superstitions around coffins in his culture. After all coffins were used for storing dried fruits and stacked on house roof tops during the olden days.

So his idea then had been to come up with a novelty sleeper trailer which he would use when he goes camping during biking rallies.

Coincidentally he decided on the design shortly after the sleepy town east of Pretoria had experienced a spike in crime.

Thieves had poisoned most of the residents' dogs before going on a stealing rampage.

He was a victim and lost two motorcycles.

"Ever since (he built the coffin) nothing has happened," he said touching his brown panelled pine wood coffin.

He parks the coffin next to his 2000cc motorised three-wheeler in his yard, in full view of passersby or any would-be thieves.

Many people give the avid biker a stunned look, and keep as far away from him as possible whenever he is riding around.

"I think (in especially the) black culture they have got lots of respect for coffins, they don't come near me," said 51-year-old Pool.

People "walk about three or four metres (away), they don't approach the coffin."

Back at the scrap yard company, two black customers casually laugh off at the idea of using a coffin for security, making little of it as they bargain the price of a rusty oval steel bowl.

And a white customer goes about rummaging for pieces of items he wants to buy, clearly unperturbed by the coffin. He jokingly remarks "you recycle everything but coffins."

Anthropologists suggest that superstition, more than respect is what drives people of certain cultures from coffins.

"I hope people don't take it as a bad thing," said Gatinho. "We didn't put it up to scare people or wake the dead."

Even as her "security" coffin is starting to give in to the vagaries of the weather, she vows never to pull it down.

"It works for me... I have got security."

Meantime Pool makes sure he cleans and polishes his every fortnight, buffing up the yellow bold inscription "mother-in-law in transit".

Help! half yellow engine light on bmw e90 320i 2007

Hi guys.
Need some advise before taking my car to have it checked. Recently my engine light came on, half yellow. I checked in my manual and it indicates "loss of engine power".

However, the car seems to be driving normal, although I don't drive fast, I could go to 140km/h easily. I checked on the on board computer and it is giving a CC-ID 29 code. Has anyone had this error before? I want to try and diagnose the issue before I take it to a mechanic, as I don't know much about mechanics and don't want to be ripped off by these guys.

Any comments appreciated. I've been driving the car like this for 3 days now..should I stop? Or can I have the fault cleared if the car is driving normal (to me).

Thanks

Hi guys,
As the subject reads
I recently purchased a car from jhb.i live in CPT
Took the car to dealers and found a host of problems with the car that cost around 100 grand to fix.
I need to know if anyone on the forum is a lawyer that can deal with something like this or even recommend someone.
I think it might be better if jhb based as we bought the car from jhb.
ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated.

We usually take spontaneous trips over non-busy weekends, this weekend we decided to visit Loskop Dam. Took this panoramic shot of our E39 525 on the bridge outside Loskop Nature Reserve early this morning. The N11 is really scenic, lots of padstalls with hot food and cold beer.

What position must the meter be? In other words where the plug sits, does it make any difference if the plug at the bottom or plug on top?

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum. I used to own a 1989 E30 which I had quite a bit of fun with.

After that I drove a polo gti and a merc C180k.

The reason I found this forum was because I was researching some common problems on a 2009 320d manual exclusive. I drove one today and I loved it. I am considering buying it and wanted some advice on any common problems.

It has 82000km.

I have heard of timing chain issues and steering lock issues. Is this common and costly?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.
