MHD Flasher & JB4 tuning

$

I thought it may be convenient to have our own discussion and experiences with the new OBD flasher called MHD and its integration with the JB4.

MHD is the first Android handheld application to bring ECU tuning and monitoring to the BMW N54 engine. Many enthusiasts have been frustrated by the fact that the BimmerBoost (BB) DME capped boost at around 18psi tapering to 12psi at redline. MHD has Cobb's race logic which allows the DME to see up to 21psi across the board. Good news for the professional tuners and the Backyard tuners (BYT) =) since this provides more tuning flexibility.

Purchase:

Purchase the MHD flasher app here

The flasher is very easy to install. All you need is any compatible Android 3.2 and up device/smart phone. Connect the device to your car using a standard K+Dcan cable to the OBD port and an OTG USB cable.

Then you choose and install from the pre-purchased MHD Q-Logic built-in maps or my personal preference the BMS MHD backend flashes to run with the JB4 or you can upload your own custom map.

Some of the features include:

◦Read stock ECU - as fast as 5s on most of the cars.
◦Allows increased torque limits
◦Optional increased boost ceiling (I8A0S/IJE0S)
◦Upgrade to IJE0S / I8A0S to take advantage of the specific features (more monitors available, increased boost limit)
◦2 minutes map switching
◦Initial install time : 18 minutes on KLINE cars (2007 & Early 2008), 38 minutes on DCAN cars (2008+)
◦Read / delete engine trouble codes.
◦Reset adaptation values (Lambda, Fuel/air, Octane rating, VANOS, Throttle, Battery

•Monitor module◦Extensive logging values list, up to 30 values at the same time.
◦Save logging session to .CSV files
◦Configurable Gauges

◦Linear throttle option
◦Wastegate rattle fix option

Supported vehicles:

2007-2010 135i, 335i and 535i
2011-2013 335is
2009-2015 Z435i/is
2011-2012 1M

Pay to play:

The MHD licence is VIN locked to one car and you have to pay for the flasher app module; the built in maps and the monitor module.

LIKES:

* Very convenient to use
* Various options to load tuning files
* You can connect to the flasher before purchasing and it will identify your VIN and ECU software version.
* The MHD monitoring and logging is good for those that wants to run a standalone flash without a JB4. The JB has its own monitoring and logging abilities which I prefer, so buying the MHD monitoring module is not worth it.
* Makes the Bimmerboost Flash (BB) platform redundant
* Makes the expensive COBB device redundant for the N54 platform.
* Resetting adaptation values - brilliant.

DISLIKES:

* Not really
* But plenty reports of it being buggy
* Random misfires after loading a custom or MHD or JB4 backend flash.

E36 sound rattle advice

I've been having a lot of rattling coming from the back when playing my system, I did discover that the poles where the rear headrests are on where rattling which I sorted that out (sort of) Now there seems be rattle from the parcel shelve. When I got the car the previous owner made 2 ports on the shelve and at that time I wasn't having these rattles. With time they appeared. Now I was thinking of removing shelve and fitting something underneath the board to help, I don't want to get Dynamat which I believe is very pricey, has anyone used something else to help with rattles ? I did figure another rattle in the boot, on either side behind the carpets there are vents with plastic flaps which that was also causing rattles. I understand that with so much pressure in the boot that more than likely one can't get rid of all, but most noticeable is from inside and coming from the back sounding like from the parcel shelve. From inside the boot there are some holes underneath the parcel shelve which I put a few pieces of sponge but difficult to get fingers in and can't really spread all over. Won't underfelt or something work ? What have u guys done

Hi, I think the 11.7 we ran at ODI this weekend at the Fanatics RaceDay is the record for the quickest & fastest M4 in the country. Let me know if anyone has seen a faster recorded time at an official track.

BMW 2000 CS

Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know where I can get some more information about this vehicle?

It's a 1967 BMW 2000 CS, the VIN number is 1106706.

We were able to get the build date and original colour from BMW however we are looking for something similar to a modern day VIN decoder.

We have bought the car as a project car, it has a matching engine number so we would like to do a full restoration to how the car originally was.

Any information is appreciated.

BMW 330d e90 LCI vibration damper pulley failure

Hello fellow BMW owners

I own a BMW 330d LCI=). Last week Friday the damper pulley on the crank pulley failed at 175000km Cry. I was busy driving on the free way when it happened. I bought a new one on Monday morning and installed it. When I tried to start the car, it gave me an yellow exclamation mark and it refused to start. Do I need to have the ECU reset or faults cleared on the car with a diagnostic.

Issues with AEM Water/Meth controller

Hello all,

So when I first installed my W/M kit, when testing, I noted that it would cut out. At the time I had it connected to my electronic boost controller, so it would send it into boost safe mode.

Subsequently I disconnected the W/M from the boost controller, but I've noticed on occasion that it still seems to cut out whilst injecting. It returns to standby mode (no error flashes or anything), and then after a few seconds, it resumes with it's injecting duties.

Any ideas / thoughts of what the issue could be?

Alternatively, is there anyone using the same kit (AEM V2 progressive), who would be willing to swap out controllers to test? That way I can see if it's a controller issue, or perhaps an issue with the wiring or something.

What's odd is that it is intermittent, so I doubt it's a wiring issue.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks

335i ODI Prep and Race Review

When I found out about the event happening at ODI I knew it might be one of the last opportunities to test the 335i after fitting the RB turbos.

As a lot of you know the 335i belongs to my wife and its her daily driver. So I had to scheme how to get it out of her hands for a bit of time. The car has 80,000km's now and has been trouble free beside a failed fuel pump and problem with one of the intake pipes which was causing a whistle when tapping off. I fixed that a few months ago so I decided to pull a move. I told her it needs to get replaced and its a big job a wadda wadda I ordered the VTT inlets and fitted them two weeks before the race weekend. Car stood until five days before I started testing it. On spool up the car was not happy over boosting and closing the throttle. As you all know I have always run a flash on the car so decided to try remedy the issue. Two flash attempts later I gave up and took the easy choice - enter the JB4. By now it was Thursday and the search for a unit started. On Saturday the day before the race the kind gentlemen from FR&R loaned me a ISO unit.
At around 1pm I went for my first test drive whilst the forum committee was gathering to meet at my place. The rest I am pretty ashamed to say but being use to the 5V JB on the VW units I thought the power wire was for meth and left it off. Kish and the gents from Durban came to the rescue with a JB4 101 and 1,2,3 the car was sorted. I left my flash as the back end and copied the boost target of the flash onto the JB. Two test drives later and I was impressed with the new found power at the top of the VTT inlets so I made quite a dicey call and decided not to fit the methanol on the car. I have never used ethanol neither so I knew I had to make my first run count.
Enter the day of the race. Sitting with a record is not a easy thing because everyone is there to beat it and I started thinking that I should have had the much needed meth for the 1km. As soon as the track opened I made sure to go quickly before it got hot - I think I was car two on the line. Nice 6 degree temperature with no wind. I always run the 1km with the standard run flats, I got a bit of a concern with the fat high sidewall Mickeys I use. Of I went with a perfect run. Coming back I told my pit crew the run cannot be improved because the stars aligned. The issue is the announcer did not call my speed so I would have to wait for the next day for the results to get released (we have seen what happens when you start partying too early at ODI). The new stock frame record is still mine sitting at 256km/h. A got beat by a single turbo N54 running a 259km/h that had issues on top of it so I think the singles are going to be the new kings with quite a few complete and quite a few that are being prepped.
All in all it was a great outing and it has created a itch to go do a full ball run to get the 260 mark which is what the car deserves. I still run the stock map sensor so I am boost limited and with the meth in the mix and maybe some semi slicks I think the extra 4km/h is easily attainable.
Big thanks to all that assisted in the achievement.

This 525i Touring is now getting its third engine. First one dropped a valve, and the second engine overheated (will confirm upon inspection the exact cause and damage). For now, we managed to source another engine to get this baby back on the road.

Will 8.5 wide rims fit my car? F20

My rims are 7.5 front and rear. Would 8.5s fit my car? I'm sure I've seen these rims on the m sport range of the f20? They're both 17s. Sorry, I'm new to this so bear with me.

Here's a link to the dimensions of my current wheels. http://www.vipalloywheels.co.uk/bmw-whee...loy-wheels

I can't seem to find similar info about the ones I want. But here's a pic. I believe they're originally from the E90 sport pack? From my research, they appear to be 8, or 8.5 wide.

Also, slightly off topic, what's the deal with motorplan and fitting second hand rims, even though they are original BMW rims?
