Advice on buying an E36 328i (previously overheated)

$

Hey guys,

Hopefully someone can help? I'm looking at purchasing an E36 328i but it had blown a head gasket due to failed water pipe and overheated, the owner says the head is not warped and all is okay (head gasket is being replaced) but there is always a possibility. I'm really tempted as I sold my E36 325i and really shouldn't have, miss that car alot and this 328i is kind of my last hope - if this doesn't work out i'll probably buy a small Corsa/Bantam bakkie as it's what I should do but...

Am i biting off more than i can chew with this? Reason I'm interested in the car was because it is relatively cheap and supposedly in pretty good condition interior and exterior wise (haven't seen it yet though).

Parts for the bm's are expensive and finding a second hand head could be an issue plus fitting it is quite a job.

Any known symptoms of a warped/ cracked head I can look out for? I know if the head is cracked it would probably smoke and maybe have a sweet-ish smell and if the head is warped the new head gasket won't seal and will probably blow again but it could still last awhile before doing that which is not good for me as I wont be able to detect it before I purchase.

My budget is unfortunately very tight, granted the car will be running and all and supposedly in pretty good nic just knowing that it overheated makes me nervous, any idea on what you guys would pay and if I should just walk?

Any advice would be appreciatedTy

E46 330d - Is this a bad idea? A few questions.

Good evening members. Im new here, Infra007 said I should check the site out and its great to find so much information about BMW. I currently drive a 2004 Saab 9-3 Aero and the fuel consumption is killing me and obviously parts and maintenance is a bit of an issue. I do enjoy the solid feel of the car and the power is nice too but it needs to go. I have been looking at an E46 330d and have a few questions.

1. Which model has the 150kw engine? I really want this version over the 135kw version
2. What sort of tuning options are there? I hear you can get to around 180kw with a remap.
3. What sort of fuel consumption should I expect? Im currently getting about 13.l/100km around town and 9l/100km or better on the open road.
4. What things should I look out for when shopping around?
5. What is maintenance like?

Thanks a lot!

F30 335i engine replacement at 60000km

Hi guys

Looking to hear some of your views on this.

I started hearing an odd sound at around 2000rpm under little/no load when keeping the revs and speed constant. Sounded like a metallic chatter of sorts. Difficult to explain. Kinda like a cross between a miss and noisy tappets (of old). Would disappear as soon as I gave a little throttle.

I took it into SMG Cape Town in Century City for them to have a look at, and they couldn't find any error codes/faults logged in the ECU. They ended up logging a Puma case with BMW SA who instructed them to remove the top engine covers and sump to have a look around. Suspected a bearing.

They've subsequently been instructed to replace the engine!?!? It arrived on Friday, has been fitted and they're in the process of testing. I've also told them to sort out all the admin to get police clearance, micro dots fitted, etc. should have it back early next week.

Now, although on the one hand I'm kinda glad they're replacing the entire engine (minus turbo, which they're swapping over from the old engine) instead of disassembling and fiddling inside my baby's insides, this does leave me a little concerned. Why would they go such a drastic route and replace the entire engine? I'm thankful motor plan is covering this, but it does leaves me wondering about the quality of the vehicle afterwards. There's something about having the equivalent of heart replacement surgery performed at a dealer, which doesn't leave me with a warm fuzzy feeling.

Some questions:
- Do I have any grounds to ask for a replacement vehicle?
- Should I receive some sort of detailed explanation to what caused this drastic measure?
- Do I worry about future issues relating to quality - parts and the install?
- Do I have grounds to ask for an extended warranty/motor plan, fearing a repeat?
- Does this hurt the resale value on my vehicle?

My confidence in the brand is feeling a little low at the moment, if I'm honest. Granted, they're attempting to resolve the issue, but I have to question why it's necessary in the first place. And before someone climbs into me stating mechanical failures happen, I fully understand and appreciate this. Again, just doesn't leave me feeling all warm and fuzzy. Make no mistakes, I won't be keeping this vehicle outside of motor plan.

Would appreciate your views on this guys.

Thanks
Bernard

E39 touring - Air suspension

Hi guys

I need to replace the rear air suspension on the touring. It finally gave up after having a leak since I got it.

BMW price was about 5k a side last I checked RedNo

Do any of you know of any other local places that wont charge a kidney?
The other option is ebay/online - can get both sides for about 5k landed.
but would prefer to get a local if I can.

http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E39-525i-M5...s/ES66065/

part numbers are: 37121095081 and 37121095082
this is for touring models with self leveling sport suspension

the part numbers for the non sport are: 37121094613 and 37121094614
While not ideal, it will also work. From reading the spring rates are slightly different as well as the height, but the system will auto adjust to the correct height.

Any leads will be helpful.
thanks

Hi guys.
Can anyone advise if it's possible to have my Idrive updated to the latest version?
I am asking this cos my 320d was built in July 2014 and is a M-Sport with SAT g'box. I don't have the navigation option but I have hifi sound, enhanced Bluetooth connectivity and front and rear sensors. In December I was given a 3 series courtesy vehicle with a much lower spec then mine which had a cool new idrive set up. Today I received a new 1 series 118i, lower spec then mine again, as a courtesy vehicle and this has a cool idrive set up as well that even has the sport display.......it's not even a M-Sport!

Asked the dealer says that it's not possible. ..i think that it is...what do you think?

DIY: e46 Rear Bumper Removal + Rear Bumper Rail Guide Replacement

$

Dear All,

This weekend I did not have much time for the planned DIY's I was going to do.

I never the less decided to document a few DIY's I did get to.

These are the tools you will need:
Torx T50 (male) piece
Screwdriver
10mm Socket and Rachet
Gloves
Hands

Parts:
BMW Part No: ____________

WARNING: My car is dirty. I haven't had time with work and rain to clean but will do as soon as I can.

Begin by removing the lower bumper strip (this is obviously for the pre-facelift rear bumper). I found the easiest is go in from underneath and pull/push the trim towards you and gently pull with the other hand.

[Image: 2002a3ff-7ffa-4b62-b804-741f9eae86fe_zps2cxgpnws.jpg]

Next you remove the clips on either side (located inside the wheel arch) by prying it open with the tip of the screwdriver.

Grab your Torx tool and have a look under the part where the bumper trim was. There are 2 )two) T50 torx bolts.

Remember to loosen by turning to the left (to the left..)

Hand model advertisement.

Do for both sides

Remove bumper by lightly pulling at the back. (better done if 2 (two) people remove it otherwise the front parts may fall).

JUST REMEMBER: Your rear bumper should have clips above the wheel arch to "clamp" the rear bumper to the body of the car. A DIY on this will follow shortly.

Grab your 10mm socket and rachet and undo the two bolts underneath the Guide Rail Piece. Kindly note that there is a third bolt (can be seen in above pic where the part meets the wheel well) which must also be undone with a 8mm (i think). As mine was broken I did not have to undo this bolt (see below) but did do it when replaced.

Two nuts on the floor

Fit the new part.

Install everything in reverse to above and youre done.

DIY: e46 Sagging Rear Bumper Fix

DEar All,

I have had my car with numerous shops that could not fix my sagging bumper.

Safe to say this can be fixed with two clips bought at the dealer which none of the above shops knew. Actually heard how to fix from a panel shop.

Tools Needed:
Gloves
Hands
Sharp object to clean

Parts Needed:
Part Number: 51 12 4 015 053 Bumper clips (at R40.......EACH!!!)
Actually listed as "026843/RR TRIM PNL"

Here is a pic of the sagging bumper

This might be easier if the Wheel was removed but I was in a hurry.

Start be separating the Wheel arch plastic from the bumper and arch with your finger.

Use the sharp object to carefully clean out dirt and grime.

Use your one hand to hook the bottom part of the bumper with the clip and pull the bumper up while simultaneously pushing the bumper up with the other hand.

(dont have pick of how I did this as both hands were preoccupied.)

Pics of how bumper looks now:

MPerfromance Exhaust + Catless Downpipe

Hi guys,
Just wanted to get your thoughts on the MPerfromance Exhaust + Catless Downpipe on a M135i?

Is it too loud for daily driving?
Is there drone whilst driving?
How easy is it to live with on a daily basis?

I have smelt the fumes off a VW GTI with downpipe and its not pleasant, almost smells like its over fueling, is this normal to have when just fitting a catless downpipe?

Also in terms of gains with no software, what is normal to be expecting?
