E46 330i

Hi Guys,

Sho.. Been a while Rofl

So I've always loved the E46 Individuals, and I regretted selling my old 320i so I decided it was time for...

So finding a clean one with the right spec is pretty f***ing tough, saw some real shockers but ended up finding the one...

Usual options as well as HK sound

She does need some work, but I'll hopefully be documenting the DIY...

Snapped up a few random pics...

DISA Valve

These are a rather notorious part on these cars, they are meant to regulate intake pressure depending on driving style. Their construction is a known issue, basically the pin that holds the actual flap in place comes loose releasing all of the stuff into your intake a la hand grenade

With this in mind, it was the first bit of maintenance I chose to carry out...

Quite an easy job, I chose to clean the throttle body and Idle valve while I was in there.

It fits just above the intake boot, two T40 bolts hold it on
[Image: FT3sfMi.jpg]

Here you can see the condition of the old part, the flap was actually loose and the pin was on it's way out... This is after 170k kms. The issue with the flap being loose is that the ECU fuels according to the position of that flap, the car really lacked that punch that you expect from a 170odd kw engine before.

Here's what a new one looks like at the default position (notice the flap is open), it actually has loads of tension and is difficult to move manually... Compared to the old one which basically moved without any effort.

All back together:

I know the engine bay is filthy, but there's more to do before the cleaning can happen

Not a cheap job, part from the dealers is R5200 with discount, there are several cheaper options on ebay but I chose not to install a generic part because of the possible repercussions if it were to fail.

The car now feels muuuuch smoother and the low end torque is back.

Next up...

Interior Clean

So as with most cars on the road, it looked as if the leather was never properly cleaned... So I got my detailing stuff together and tackled it on Sunday.

Turtle Wax Interior 1 for cleaning
Gtechniq L1 and C6 for protection

Before:

And after:

Next up is the valve cover gasket replacement... Another common wear and tear part, and mine is definitely in need of replacement (I can see some oil sweat around the cover).

Also, there was a bundle of wires in the cubby that annoyed me, so I decided to see where they were going

Expectation :

Reality:

And to conclude, obligatory wash pics:

[Image: 4Oex9RR.jpg][/quote]

Then... After numerous complaints from family / management, I decided to have a look fixing the oil leaks.

This is what I imagine the engine looks like when it's running

I noticed that most of the oil was around the valve cover gasket, which eventually makes it's way down to any fresh tar/paving around.

Some investigatory pics

So off to ... uh... Goldwagen to get some replacement parts Fencelook

Once I got back, it was time to...

Firstly, the cabin filter and housing, cover comes off, followed by the filter and 3 t30 bolts

And then the covers

Followed by a shitload of #10 bolts, and you're left with this:

Here we can see how the oil was seeping out of the half moon areas, probably because sealant was applied incorrectly.

Valve cover got a good and well needed clean

Took a while to clean the old gunk off, now ready for some quality sealant (Sealant is only required in the half moon and front cover areas)

New sealant applied

And then...

All done!

No more leaks, although I still need to give the engine a proper clean... Didn't want to get the pressure washer in there with wet sealant around. Strangeley enough, it was also a vacuum leak source, and my rough idle issue is now gone. Car is muuuch smoother and happier.

Thanks for watching Ty

just took delivery of a 135i 2010 M sport,

while happily driving on the N2 from PE the cars water level light goes on, first its orange then Goes Angry Red then car just slowly looses power.

while trying to diagnose the problem ( back seat mechanic ) i noticed the following:

1. no coolent was present in the reservoir
2. the oil temp gauge hardly moved
3. this problem only started after 50km of driving.

i then called the dealership ( i will ommit names until my problem is fixed) i purchased the car from. they immediately came out and collected the car which is currently with them and they sorting it out.

My question is has anyone had a similar experience and if so what is the problem ?
also what should i be on the look out for when the vehicle is returned ?

Got a bulge in RFT - Need a replacement tyre

Hi Guys,

So over the Easter Weekend and driving out of town, I noticed a bulge in my Bridgestone Poteza RE050 run flat tyre while filling up petrol.

It looks like in the picture.

I reluctantly had to continue with my journey, and drove very slowly and gingerly.

Luckily I made it home safely. Unfortunately there is still about 50% thread left on the other tyre, so I'm looking to buy a used 225/40/R18 RFT if anyone has one for sale, or knows where I can get one. I am located in Southern Suburbs Cape Town.

Thanks in advance

Buying advice - M235i vs. M240i vs. M240i LCI

Hi all,

I am considering purchasing a 2 series in the next few months and was hoping to get some advice on which model to get. I want to buy a used (1-3 year old) auto coupe.

Is it worth paying the premium for the B58 motor over the N55?

Is it worth paying the premium for the LCI updated version of the M240i?

What is the age and mileage sweet spot for buying a second performance hand BMW? More specifically the M235/40?

Any other relevant buying advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Xpel Headlight/Taillight Tinting Promotion

Hey guys and girls

With HID, LED and laser lamps, and ultra-clear polycarbonate and acrylic lenses, it’s easier than ever to see what’s in front of you on the road.

But as clear and sleek as new composite headlights are, they’re also close to the road and extremely vulnerable to damage from both debris and the sun’s UV rays. Lenses can get sandblasted from dirt, salt and small stones, cracked from larger rock strikes, or go cloudy from constant exposure to the sun.

Polishing products can temporarily restore some clarity to clouded or scratched lenses, but they compromise the built-in clear coat protection.

XPEL offers a much more durable, elegant solution. Now, it’s just as easy to protect your headlights as it is your paint.

XPEL Headlamp Protection Film has a proprietary outer skin that is nearly impossible to scuff or scratch, and an inner layer that bonds to lenses and evens out any surface imperfections. It’s thick enough to handle direct stone strikes, but still lets headlamp heat dissipate naturally.

You can preserve your car’s original look with XPEL’s clear film, or change it up with tinted film in Slate Smoke and Charcoal Smoke. Whichever color you choose, you’ll get perfect optical clarity and industry-leading protection, a perfect fit through XPEL’s cutting-edge headlamp template system.

We are happy to inform everyone that you no longer have to settle for “cheap” derivatives on your headlights and tail lights. Application time takes only a couple of minutes and has a great outcome for only R600 per set, and if you choose to do both headlights and taillights, we will do both for only R1000. Please note availability is limited to only 10 customers.

Surebrake Pads / Track setup

Howzit guys,
So I asked my SO to purchase a set of pads for me from GW since she works 5mins from them plus I had a massive hangover Fencelookdunno anymore

So anyway, she was given a set of Surebrakes - the guy that helped her assured her that they were very good (even though they arent too popular), plus they werent very cheap either. So my question - should I take these back?
Has anyone had experience with Surebrakes?

Bonus question - I think I have gotten my car to the point where I am confident enough to take it on a track once in a while (just for fun - this isnt a racecar).
I am assuming street pads and discs generally wouldnt be suited for track use.
My question is what do you guys normally do - Do you change pads when you get on track? Do you run track pads permanently (I am assuming not because of the squeal)

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice

My car has done just under 100k km and is in need of a new clutch

I have contacted BMW and excluding fitment a clutch/flywheel kit with necessary screws, springs, pins etc is around R25K.

I'm hoping I can get an aftermarket version stage2 or similar without having to replace the flywheel and get better performance.
