I'v e been considering a C63 facelift for a while now, so naturally as we all do, I started doing my homework on these cars. Reviews in general ranged from good, great, infact it is seen as an excellent alternative to BMW "M-cars" altogether, so I was sold....Well until I stumbled across this here article about a class action suit against Mercedes Benz relating to the "catastrophic failure " of M156 motor in the 63 range

...So I kept my fingers crossed and hoped that it was limited to the Old E-Class you know, the W206 range and prayed that it didn't effect the C63 as well...Well, I was in for some bad news, after bit more research I found that a number of class action suits has been lodged against MB, all of them relating to "catastrophic engine" failure :cry:phc...numerous C63 owners complaining of a ticking sound coming from the engine just after reaching the 100k mark on the Odo and then having he motor blow up soon there after...went on youtube and sure enough there were footage of C63 sounding like tractors!! Apparently Cam followers and Camshafts are to blame.
....but I had hope, didn't we have a bearing problem which also caused "catastrophic failure" in the early e46 M3 models? ( I know what u gonna say, "BMW stepped up and fixed the bearings and more important they updated the s54")..True. now why Iam starting this thread is to establish how the C63's are behaving in South Africa, because ive seen quite a few with 150k-170k on them... especially after reading article in hellopeter below,
My husband(49 yrs)purchased his dream car on the 13th September 2013. A red C63 AMG Black Series Mercedes. We've been through 3 Mercs over a period of 5 years( C32AMG,2009 C350 Avantgarde,2009 C63 AMG).
He enjoyed three weeks of driving bliss, then the joy turned to utter horror. While driving home from a family visit 15 Kms away the car suddenly stopped. Oil spewing out the engine and smoke started coming out the engine and exhaust.
We made contact with Merc on call, they came out and towed the car to Merc Constantia.
We where told that there's two holes in the engine block! Two pistons went through the engine block!!!! A new engine costing 800 000(excl vat) needed.
My husbands first interaction with Merc: "what speed where you going"
HELLO!!! High performance car even if you going 300 should not produce this result. Thank goodness for tracking devices, I pulled a report and the car has never been over the 180km mark.
This is not a Rant of a Rave for what happened to the owner in the above post, just thought I would share... to make tings worse iam fresh from reading an excellent review on the new Golf 7R,by Adamr never thought I would pay R500K for a golf, so if there are any C63 owners out there please please share your experience with me and give me a reason not to pay Half Bar for a Golf
