E46 320d cooling issue

Hi all,

Have an issue and wanted to see if anyone has had similar. Was driving yesterday and the coolant light came on and went off again after a few minutes. This happened a few times. Decided to check water this morning and when I opened the radiator cap it literally flew off. Engine was stone cold. Is it normal to have that much pressure in radiator and what could cause this? Also water level was low.

Will appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

BMW M-division goes Dutch
25 September, 2014 | by Lance Branquinho

erhaps the most revered division of all automotive divisions, BMW’s M-GmbH, is due for a new boss.

BMW has confirmed that Friedrich Nitschke is retiring at the age of 59, and his position as the boss of M will be a man from, Audi. Yes, Audi. And he isn’t German, but Dutch.

Frank van Meel becomes substantive in his position as M-division boss on 1 January 2014 (and yes, they go to work on New Year ’s Day in Germany), after a career that started at Audi in 1996.

BMW managed to convince van Meel to move to its M-division after the Dutch automotive professional’s clash with other Audi personnel concerning the company’s R8 replacement and R8 e-tron project. Van Meel had been operating in direct competition to the M-division at Quattro GmbH since 2012. His experience in the design and counter-marketing of BMW products makes him extremely M-car literate: an unusual, but pragmatic choice.

Although he will only be confirmed as board member for M-GmbH next year, van Meel is expected to occupy his new office during the first week of October. Audi’s best now building BMW’s M-cars? Stranger things have happened in the automotive world. But not many.

BMW M Division Employs Former Quattro Boss To Prove It's Serious About AWD
Former Audi quattro boss Franciscus Van Meel is taking over from Friedrich Nitschke at BMW M, as the brand moves towards all-wheel drive in its performance models
By Darren Cassey, 24 September 2014

http://www.carthrottle.com/bmw-m-divisio...about-awd/

We’ve known for a while now that BMW’s M Division will be moving away from rear-driven cars in the not-too-distant future - starting with the M5 and likely filtering down eventually - and it seems the Bavarians are serious about getting fast all-wheel drive right. Former Audi quattro boss Franciscus Van Meel will succeed the retiring Friedrich Nitschke as M boss from 1 January.

The appointment comes less than a year after Van Meel left Audi, after reportedly falling out with Audi development boss Ulrich Hackenberg over the direction of the new Audi R8. It appears BMW has jumped at the chance to take advantage of the situation at Audi to snap up a man with the perfect knowledge base for its new direction.

Van Meel had held a number of senior positions in chassis development at Audi since 1996, before he became managing director of quattro in 2012.

Good evening guys

When I recently signed up I saw that I actually registered back in 2011.
My mom and sister both bought 1992 E30 318i's (manual & auto) back in 1997 whereby I inherited my mom's maroon beemer when I started working in 2010. That car could not break, we towed a trailer multiple times down to George for our yearly vacation. We moved three times and used it everytime to move all our furniture. I sold it at 296000km (was really not well maintained) and got myself an E36 BMW 316i. Beautiful car but had a lot of problems that surfaced in the 18 months that I had it. Thing that I really don't like about the E36 is that they are very low. Used to scrape every f-en speedbump or ridge. Car also overheated on a trip to Vaalwater (expensive lesson learnt - fuel attendant did not replace radiator cap properly, I now always check) and cost me about R10k to repair. Car didn't feel the same. Sold it, then went safe and bought a 2008 VW Polo 1.6 and have had many reliable, unexciting, economic miles. Mother had an E46 320d steptronic (great car) and my old man briefly had a 1985 E23 728i automatic which was stolen - what a loss, I remember the huge comfortable seats and old fashioned facia.

So I am hoping to get myself another BMW (looking at E83 X3 2.0d/E46 or E90 320d), preferably an X3. Getting married in March (they drive BMW's also - makes me happy).

I read through some posts on here regarding the X3, seems the transfer box is something to look at? Also, what does services cost from 120000km onwards? I saw a 2005 X3 2.0 diesel manual for R130k with about 119000km on - yay or nay?

Thanks!

And below is my absolute dream car, one day when I'm big

So, deal done, bought myself a 1987 E28 M535i, verified by bmwvin.com and RealOEM. Final check to be done with BMW SA. Has a full BMW M Technic kit on it, some stuff to do to return it to original condition, but the conclusion of a 4 year hunt and a car I have lusted over since my dad an E28 520i back in the day.
Preview pics, more to follow once I have the car!

Makhura to get water shortages report
2014-09-25 18:02

http://www.news24.com/SouthAfrica/News/M...t-20140925

Johannesburg - Gauteng Premier David Makhura will receive a report on Friday on the water shortages in the province.

"I have asked for an urgent report on the water situation in the municipalities in the province, including what the real problem is and what the source of the apparent water supply problem is," he said on the sidelines of a provincial security indaba in Germiston, on Johannesburg's East Rand, on Thursday.

"We will be able to look at the matter and where necessary discuss with the national minister of water and sanitation."

Makhura said he was meeting mayors in Gauteng on Friday to discuss how to take the province forward with regard to infrastructure and investments.

Rand Water on Thursday denied reports of water restrictions in Gauteng following water shortages during the week.

"They got it wrong. It's not water restrictions," Rand Water spokesperson Justice Mohale said.

"We are assessing the situation. For those areas that have enough water, we want to redirect some of it to areas that do not have water. We want to build water levels to help those struggling areas."

High-lying areas, such as Bedfordview and Primrose, still had water shortages because there was not enough pressure to push water there. As water levels increase, there would be enough pressure to pump water to those areas.

He said the diversion of water could take some time.

Makhura said he was concerned about the water situation.

"So many people in the province are complaining about not having water... I have been monitoring as well and people are sending me Twitter messages and they send me SMSes."

He said municipalities were doing their best to sort out the problem but a proper discussion would be held on Friday.

Water restored

Earlier, authorities said water had been restored to most of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.

Only two suburbs in Johannesburg - South Hills and Rabie Ridge - and two in Ekurhuleni - Bedfordview and Primrose - were still without water.

Earlier, Ekurhuleni city spokesperson Themba Gadebe also spoke of redirecting water to help with the problem.

He said water had been diverted from two other reservoir systems, but he could not say when water supply would be back to normal.

In a statement, he said water had been restored to the other seven affected Ekurhuleni areas.

"The situation has returned to normality in Benoni, Brakpan, Kempton Park, Germiston, Daveyton, Etwatwa, and Tsakane.

"We are confident that the situation will continue to improve. In the interim, we will continue to supply the affected areas with water tankers until the situation has normalised."

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe said South Hills and Rabie Ridge were still without water.

"In all other areas water has been restored. Every day and every hour the situation improves. I can't say when they will get water. I can't give an exact date and time."

What is an OCD person's view of soft99?

$

Before I start I must categorically state that I am a perfectionist when it comes to cars and absolutely OCD, to a point that it irritates me (not to mention people around me) ... And I honestly do think I have a problem... Having a micro millimeter scratch that can only be seen in the peripheral light of an led down lighter would erk me... New cars on the showroom floor I would rate the paint 6 or 7 out of ten and will see micro scratches ... Fluorescent lights tend to hide the smallest paint imperfections but led down lighters are a bitch as they show the paint at its worst and uncover even the smallest imperfections

So i bought some of this

[Image: be69da4675f842604026305df1480e37.jpg][Image: 4b11339d3c0737f54f027c5dccfbde84.jpg]

And some glass polish

From crazy detailer... Also bought a clay bar with auto glym detailer

Now up front.... The pics i took won't show the paint imperfections I am OCD about, so I'll post them but, they won't tell the whole story tbh... so I'll try and be as unbiased as I can

Claying the car... I hated the blue clay bar that came with the auto glym... Its not as easily squished and moulded like say a meguiars clay bar and much prefer the meguiars product... Be this as it may I trudged along and clayed the car, not the best tbh but done and this is what the car looks like after being clayed

[Image: a62dadf04b82dc6fe4f7cf05a4bf73be.jpg][Image: 4eb0967903c613b803ed4c04d8e95ad1.jpg][Image: db44e030a5e275e7467d0fc3dfcf6b2c.jpg]

So it looks like it's been polished and at this point I wasn't expecting a major improvement in gloss over the bare paint with soft 99... Apologies for the kak pics... But I think one gets the idea

So onto soft99... Packaging wise there is zero English on it so unless mandarin is in your vocab you can read the instructions... It comes with a micro fibre cloth in the package and a tin that conceals the "magic paste"

This tin is like those rally polish tins or a paint tin where you need a screw driver to pry it open... One thing though with this kind of packaging is the big and very plausible risk of getting dirt in the waxy paste... One will always be tempted to leave the tin open to dab the mf cloth in it and apply to the car... Catch 22 one can't close the tin and open it quickly (you need that screwdriver to open the tin all the time) and then leaving it open on the floor next to you runs the risk of getting dirt in it... It was a little frustrating

Yes it's easy to apply and even though they say it's just apply until it disappears... Its not quite that easy.... I used the polish (although to me more a wax) sparingly and only dabbing the mf cloth in it and apply to a panel at a time... I noticed it does leave some residue and u had to do a re over the panel to get some of the residue off... Its not bad residue just slight streaks it leaves behind

So what did the car look like when done

[Image: c6b30fa5e7aec3c485d93c826f381600.jpg][Image: 948e78829e310995df4bf85142dda22c.jpg]

I'll take better pics in the sun tomorrow... Soft99 Def brings out a nice shine to the car... Not quite wet look buy close and thumbs up for this... There was some water spots on my paint which soft99 was not able to remove at all, whereas my bottle of triple x auto finesse made easy work of these (hence why I'm convinced this is a wax) In terms of hiding imperfections.... Soft99 was a hit and miss in terms of hiding those really micro scratches and more miss imo. And the truth is a proper detail by a professional with a machine and some serious products can not be substituted for soft 99... It is not as I thought (and as many might think as well) an instant paint defect masking product

For what it is.. Its a decent polish wax solution that is easy to apply and does take allot of the hard work out of polishing a car... Would I buy it again... Only if they include an twist type applicator pad that closes the tin at the same time... The mf setup is clumsy

So I'm off to find a detailer to detail my car and remove those micro scratches Bluebiggrin

So I've been long overdue for a showroom thread and no this isn't one yet either but yesterday I finally found a gap to pamper my own car in between customers' cars and felt I should share the results.

Since we've already detailed it twice in the last year, it just needed a wax to bring out the beauty of BMW's Space Grey. Simple rinse with the HP washer then foam down with Auto Finesse Avalanche Snow Foam, rinsed again and washed using 2 bucket method and Auto Finesse Lather shampoo. Dried with Valet drying towel and quick detailer. Then each panel was sprayed with Isopropyl Alcohol to cleanse, as dust settled very quickly, before a simple application of Auto Finesse Spirit Wax. This stuff smells amazing and the results are even better! Here's a few afters taken late this evening very soon after application. The results were even better the next day but need to take more pics.
