E46 Clear Tailights

Hi Gents,

Looking at purchasing the clear tail lights from Gdrive Automotive. Since I am not in Jhb and can't have a look at them first hand, maybe one of you have seen these lights and can tell me if they look oem.. I don't want to buy blind. Importing them works out to be a fair bit more with the exchange rate and taxes/customs.

Thanks Thumbs

Transmission Oil advice for E46 318i 2002 n42 auto engine

Hi guys, I'm in need of some advice on what to use on my e46, the automatic transmission oil cooler has failed causing automatic transmission oil and coolent to mix,
I've gathered that I will need to
Replace the transmission oil cooler , flush and refill the cooling system and the transmission and replace the transmission oil filter .

Can you give me advice on what oil I could use as an alternate to the oil sold through the BMW dealers?

8 liters of that stuff costs over R4000 , it cost more then all the original bmw parts put together .

I have never changed the transmission oil on my car,it's done around 190000kms now the car still drives and shifts smoothly, but this issue has to be corrected. As there's transmission oil in the cooling system there must be water in the transmission.

The current oil is that BMW lifelong oil. Are there cheaper alternats that work just as well of not better that I could use? Or should I bite the bullet and just stick to the original oil?

Thanks in advance , I really appreciate your advice

Will be much appreciated

Guys,

Ok the problem has been diagnosed with the E46 M3 going in to limp mode, but the part required is Ex germany, so 2 week wait.

Anybody got one lying around or a lead on where I can get one. As described by Rolf:

We have discovered a collapsed vent idle valve hose under the intake plenum, however, the part isn't costly but is Ex Germany, no dealer has stock in the country...

so I need to be pushed into the correct direction before I thumb suck what the problem could be. I hope this makes sense

when the air con is on, the facial vents are cool but you can feel there is some heat coming through (that's including the heat regulator thing in the middle vents is on cold) but when I put the demister vents on or the feet vents on, together with the facial vents, they blow hot but the facial vents are nice and cold.

now being a black car and summer here there is no way I can handle it. I will see a heat stroke one of these days.

I have taken my car in for air con check up no leaks detected and gas refilled with oil. its better then it was I must say but still its nowhere near getting the car cool during a summers day. and going through smash and grab hotspots id rather not have the windows open

My opinion on F30 320d M-Sport loan car....

So my F30 328i is in at BMW as of this morning for all the M-Performance loving, YAAAY cant wait to fetch her later... anyway

BMW gave me a 2014 F30 320d M-Sport for the day and as a pertrol fan boy I felt it was important for me to say that I finally get what all the tractor fan boys are saying.

I have test driven the F30 320i a few times and the 320d is just, and I never thought I would ever say this but, its just on another level. That torque is awesome but unlike the 320i that just keeps revving with ease, the 320d's power dies off quickly once it hits higher revs. You would think then that the 320i would be a quicker car... but the low end torque makes up for it though and accelerates the diesal to the point of the power dying off and I think that's why the 2 cars are similar 0-100.

What I can say though is halfway to work I just couldnt stand the sound that diesal engine makes. its like the engine is full of sand, and for me this is what puts me off of diesals. (The only thing). Its so loud in the cabin compared to my 328i. For me an engine needs to sounds crisp and clean, not dirty and broken.

The 320d is def a great buy for the diesal fanboys though, drives like a dream. Blowheart

VW club Track day at Kyalami (Vids)

This past weekend we had another visit to my favorite track in SA with the VW club at Kyalami.

Epic day out with a bucket load of cars! Despite a boost issue which limited the boost to 1.0 bar, it was still a bloody great day out and still beating by previous best Rollsmile

The m135 that was drifting onto the main straight was epic and also set some blistering lap times which has increased my respect for that car hugely!!

Time to get more Fanatics to the track days!!!

Some vids of the day incl a bloody close call with a Jetta

Hi guys

I was wondering under my car last night and came across this perished rubber.

Does anyone know what it is and its function (ignore the bungee cord Wink )?

My only guess would be a type of buffer block for the shock...

Thanks!

Hi

Tyres have about 4.6mm in the front and 5.6mm at the rear according to an AA report.

I've heard people say to leave deepest thread at the rear for bmw. Could anyone confirm this?

Also if I do happen to rotate, how is the rotation done? Opposite front and rear or diagonal?

Thanks

Team SavSpeed Racing unveils new race car.

Press release- Team SavSpeed Racing
October 2014
For immediate release
Local BMW race prep and tuning experts, Team SavSpeed Racing, revealed their brand new BMW F30 wide body racer at the Kyalami Grand Prix circuit recently at one of the BMW Car Club Gauteng’s track and race days.

BMW F30 Wide Body
This was the first full shakedown of the car in proper race trim and there was no better place to do it than in front of a crowd of BMW enthusiasts and at a race series that the car was ultimately built to compete in.

BMW F30 Wide Body BMW F30 Wide Body
Very briefly, this menacing and purposeful looking race car features a Team SavSpeed Racing fettled turbocharged 3.0 litre BMW straight six powerplant producing over 800hp to go with the all the other hardcore race prep goodies required to lap a circuit in anger, and put the F30 wide body at the top of the timesheets. This demonstrates in no uncertain terms that the car has the go to match the show.

BMW F30 Wide Body BMW F30 Wide Body
The car was modified and built by owner/driver Sav Gualtieri, a BMW technician with over 25 years experience, and his team at their workshop in Edenvale. Team SavSpeed Racing has turbocharged over 200 vehicles and modified even more over the last two decades, both for street and track applications.

This has secured the team and its customers many championships and the odd South African speed record in both street and track disciplines over the years. “We are just so pleased that we have created the first wide body BMW F30 racer in the world and want to show just how good the new car is as a base to work with” says Gualtieri. “Along with Tony Colaro, our body work and aerodynamic specialist, we created a bespoke aero package for the car where form follows function.”
The previous Team SavSpeed Racing car received much acclaim and consistently proved itself to be the fastest BMW at any track in South Africa over and over and was retired at the top of its game. But the BMW E36 based car was simply outdated despite having had an incredible racing service life of almost eight years.

BMW F30 Wide Body

The BMW F30 wide body project was inspired by wanting to progress to the latest technology and show how much better a more contemporary BMW model is in its dynamic prowess. Gualtieri adds, “The car ran well at Kyalami but there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, I can’t realistically claim that the car is right on the pace yet. We will obviously keep working on it, but I don’t want to get carried away with lap times and predictions until we are completely happy with the entire package.”
Concluding Gualtieri continues, “The only way to get it right is to race it on track, so we will be aiming to enter our F30 wide body in the last two rounds of the BMW CCG Club Racing Series on the 1st and 29th of November, and maybe even in the G&H Transport Extreme Supercars Series on 15 November.”

E36 320i Timing kit

Can anyone tell what all I should buy for my timing chain replacement? I will be doing my own work.

PS: She's a single vanos engine, so maybe a bit of work should go into the vanos as well. Suggested parts will be appreciated.

I've done a vanos put-back for a mechanic before on an E34 525i so I have no issues there, should work the same.

Thanking you in advance.

Volvo's New 450bhp 2.0-Litre Concept Engine Could Be The Most Powerful Four-Pot Ever

Volvo's newest concept engine produces a thunderous 450bhp thanks to a combination of three turbos

By Jack Evans, 07 October 2014

http://www.carthrottle.com/volvos-new-45...rpot-ever/

Volvo has released details of its new ‘High Performance Drive-E Powertrain Concept,’ a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder concept engine that produces an astonishing power output of 450bhp (225bhp per litre).

The groundbreaking figure for a 2.0-litre engine has been achieved thanks to two parallel turbochargers that are backed up by one electrically-powered turbo-compressor. The job of the electric turbo is to feed air directly into the conventional turbos rather than sending it to the cylinders; this effectively eliminates the lag associated with heavily turbocharged engines.

Fuel is sent to the cylinders at a pressure of 250 bar via a high-tech fuel pump, and while currently in its concept stage, the engine shows that Volvo could have a brutally fast new model up its sleeve, most likely in Polestar guise.

Should the 450bhp Volvo concept engine be fitted underneath the bonnet of a forthcoming production Volvo, this would make the Swedish brand’s car the most powerful model with a 2.0-litre engine. It would dwarf the Mercedes A45 AMG’s 360bhp figure by a considerable margin, and even beats the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X FQ-440 MR special edition’s 440bhp output.

If Volvo can pull this off and make this incredible engine a production reality, then we’ll all have yet another reason to love the brand even more than we do already.

Maserati GT, Audi R8 V8 or GT-R??

So - time has come for another upgrade - i want to sell the SLK55 and get into something else. Need some opinions from members or if you can relay feedback from owners of the cars below. I think my heart & head just wants a good car with great styling. Not looking for all out performance (GT-R would have taken a place in my garage long ago - and i have my E36 Supercharged M3 to give me the speed fix now and then).

I just love the gorgeousness that is a Maserati GTS. However, An Audi R8 V8 is close competition - v10 would have been a hands down choice, but the price point puts it out of the equation. I'm buying to use as a daily driver. I want the car to feel & look special & not worried about 0-100 or L/100km. So what do you think then? All of the following in black, preferably blacked out.

Maserati GTS
Audi R8 V8
Nissan GT-R
Porsche 996 GT3 / Turbo or 997 Carrera 4S
Aston Martin Vantage V8

EDIT: Whats sad about this list?? BMW doesn't have a car i can consider!

You can suggest something else ... just gathering some input to decide. Photos of each in a state of tune, which is what i will end up doing....
